Am I having the p*ss taken out of me?

Right for those of you on DIY livery if your horse was in a paddock would you fill the water trough or expect the yard staff to do it for you? Jack has been happily living out in one of the paddocks for the last couple of weeks - sometimes with other full livery and riding school horses and sometimes on his own - but due to ongoing building work (our indoor school) the automatic trough isn't working. Each night I go up and I make sure that the trough is filled to the top with water (yard staff do it in the morning). It's quite a palava as the paddocks are a fair bit from the hose. Anyway the yard staff have been thanking me profusely and asking me to "train" other liveries on how to be a good livery. I know they'd do it once the yard was finished anyway but I don't think it's a big deal to fill it up since my horse is one of those in that paddock. I just wondered if others would do the same or am I going above and beyond the call of duty?

I have had to lug water across a 6 acre field up a VERY steep hill before to make sure my horses have water (spring water so no water pressure too use hose

). I think it depends on they type of yard & what you are paying etc but I don't think it is that unusual unfortunately.

i had my own yard and we used to fill up all waters in the diy fields . we then bought a quad and let them use this to do ther own if they wished and to poo pick,
i only used to get annoyed when there horse would kick bucket over straight away

yes it probably is a bit much but if you want your horse to drink then you just have to get on with it, which you have! As you say, once the yard is finished then hopefully it will be working......I'd have a bit of a moan about it if it's annoying you that much though....

My horse is on DIY livery and I would certainly not expect anyone else to fill up her water trough for me. It's different being that your horse is turned out with some of the full livery horses, in which case they should be responsible for the trough for the sake of those horses, but you are being very nice by helping them out.

No i would do the same, at least you know your horse has water. So i wouldnt worry about it, just drop little hints to the other liveries like have you checked the water today?

I've been in this situation before where I had to fill my own horses water trough - to me, it is part of being on DIY

In the end I moved to a yard which had automatic water troughs - phew, the relief

As you are livery - then you shouldn't have to fill water troughs up in the frield imo.

However, for the sake of the horse I'd just get on and do it (as you have been doing).

I woldn't mind doing it and have done so. But are you the only livery doing it? That would irritate me. Most of our fields have streams so we don't have to worry but one of them has baths that need filling and it's always the same group of us filling them up while others seem to think the fairies do it during the night...

I think its really great that you care enough to help out both horses and the staff who obviously appreciate it.

What really would get me cross is like a previous DIY yard I was on where me and a friend were doing it on behalf of other owners who couldn't be bothered to even visit their horses everyday . You can't let a horse go thirsty so we didn't have a choice.

We are DIY and last summer I was the ONLY person who bothered to fill up the water trough. It really worries me because what happens when I go on holiday? My horse was out of the main field for a chunk of the winter and several times the main field would have no water for several days so I would fill it up in the end even though my horse wasn't in there. Also I seem to be the only one who gives the trough a good scrub before filling it, do others not care what the horse are drinking? When he went back in the main field I made such a fuss about a rota for the water that people are now filling it up but not cleaning it out yet.

I'm on diy and we all have to do it, theres a hosepipe system that you connect to whatever tank you want to fill up...generally its a shared effort and whoever does it 1st but I seem to do it a lot, doesn't bother me though!

Yeah I seem to be the only one that bothers - that was the point the yard staff were making that the other liveries just come up, check their horse for 10 mins or so if they're not bringing it in to ride - then beggar off with a fleeting "oh the paddock needs water". Now personally I couldn't just leave without knowing that Jack had access to a suitable water supply for the whole night. I'm never able to leave until I know he's suitably fed and watered and if he's in I also check the ones in the stables next to him.

you're a good person to have around then..thank god everyone at my little yard cares about their horses otherwise I'd be doing the same!

My horse shares with the yo's horse. I'm always filling the water up because I can't just leave it empty. Whenever mine doesn't go out for the day then hers ends up thirsty. I also worry about when I go away...

Sorry, but my understanding of DIY is DO IT YOURSELF!!

At my yard, the liveries on DIY do EVERYTHING themselves, even down to changing the lightbulb in their tackrooms. all they pay for is rent of a stable. end of.

I always thought DIY meant do it yourself so I would expect to fill my own water trough... Sounds like the other liverys are very lazy
