Not long been on this forum and have never started a New Thread but am so annoyed had to vent my annoyance to someone. Was on facebook today and one of the liveries has posted some pictures of the horses in the snow. Lovely pictures, but they give the name of the yard and location. Pictures include my daughters retired pony and two horses i am looking after as their owner is out of the country. I have asked her to remove the pictures of my horses and the ones i am looking after or delete the name of the yard and location. I realise that most people do not have their facebook page as public, but you can never be too cautious. I don't think i am being unreasonable, or am i being a grumpy old woman.

I once took photos of a friends cats she wanted to see them so I put them on Facebook tagging her in them, she was horrified id done it because in one photo you could see some artwork in the background and she was worried it posed a security risk. I took them down immediately, was no skin off my nose either way and it made her feel better.

I think you're perfectly reasonable.

I don't like the idea of my horse's location being made public and wasn't too chuffed to find a picture of me riding my horse posted on the yard's facebook page.

Isn't this just free advertising? I have a livery page on facebook for just that, with lovely pictures of our horses in the snow? If you are a livery yard people must know where you are, and that you have horses?

It isn't the yard owners picture, i doubt they would be too impressed, its a livery. It is not a livery yard in the usual sense, a fruit farm with seven liveries, all grass. The horses are not their main business its fruit.

It's something that's never bothered me - one of my horses is on a livery yard that has a sign outside and is listed on all sorts of directories/websites/forum searches, don't really see the point of being secretive on Facebook as to where he lives. The other 2 live next door at a friend's private house, whose address I wouldn't publicise on Facebook, but anyone driving past can see there are horses in fields - if someone's going to come and steal horses or tack, they'll know they're there whether there are pictures on Facebook or not.

As I say, it doesn't worry me, but if I had done it and you asked me to remove pics, I would respect your point of view and do so :)

I would be annoyed as you never know who's looking. I am always amazed at what people put on facebook or in open albums. Do you really want everyone to know your business?

I'd be miffed too ! I'm quite protective of my pair ! It's a till death do us part thing I have with them & if they got nicked it would be the end of me. I am careful what I post. I don't put up many pics of my horses. . . .

Problem is, that by identifying the horses by name as well as their location, it can be possible to find more information on the net about the horse's history on forums and equine sites.

I'm very protective of information on my lot and keep their identity private in computer land.

I'm annoyed as you would never know horses are there, you can't see them from the road, they are well away from the public gaze. The owners very rarely advertise as once people arrive with their horses they tend to stay. I found them purely by chance.

Hopefully the pictures will be removed soon.

No you're not being a grumpy old woman you're quite right. If you look on this forum it's a minefield of information of where yards are, who goes to their horse when, what tack they have, if anyone lives on the yard.

It's like an information goldfield for thieves and ne'rdowells and facebook is no better, i can't believe some of the details people put on there. And that's coming from a really gullible old fool.

Yes it would bother me....a liveries daughter once made a vid of her pony pictures and put pictures of the times she had ridden my sisters little welsh c and my old mare in as well as pictures of a friend and sister when they went to watch xc training with them.....we asked mum if she could ask her to take them down.... It would have been different if she had asked but she hasn't.
The mum was very sorry she didn't even know she had done it.

doesn't bother me unless they aren't very good pics :)
We have a website anyway so all the info is there but then thats why we have a website :)

It wouldn't bother me to be honest, but that is because I think that determined thieves will take horses whether they get a heads up on Facebook or not.

The yard I am at is very secure...if someone managed to take a horse I would be go smacked, but it does happen. It is on of the risks and the reason we, as a very horsey lane have so many people doing regular checks.

It would bother me, if someone had kindly posted up photos and where anyone can find that horse. One of the best things about my yard is that it secure and not on the beaten track and that is how I would like it to stay. I appreciate a really determind person could probably find out information but I do regularly check what the internet shows about me and I am careful with what specific info I put up. Also, if someone posts photos up on Facebook in the public domain... this also means anyone else can legally use them!
