Pretty new to all this, and have been lurking a while - gradually showing my face every now and then....but I am now at a point where I need to know if I am hoping for a miracle?!

Basically, long story cut short, I have a show hunter who I have been doing county and agri shows on for about 7 years, who has now been forced into early retirement so can only do light hacking (I am going to keep him as a big pet, as he is very sentimental combined with being a bit tricky and I am luckily in a position that I can do so!)

I have been looking for a horse on loan, that I can move to my yard, at least 15.2...I haven't been fussy on colour/breeding/experience, just needs to be a gelding really, unless it was a super mare, hack out alone/company, be ok to groom, tack up etc and load and travel well! Not fussed if it isnt county standard, just soemthing that would hold its own at local and happily pop a few jumps! I don't mind slight mental issues or babies, as I am happy to do the schooling and put time into the horse, as well as having the experience. But every horse I seem to find that ticks some boxes has major issues that just put me off! Am I hoping for a miracle in finding this horse or do they actually exist?!

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong area - just curious to see if I am wishing on a star!

Thanks

I think you should be able to find someone who cannot afford to keep their horse at the moment, due to the financial climate. If you are happy to take mares you may have twice as many horses to pick from though ;-)

Have you tried advertising in local tack shops and perhaps asking at local yards?

There are lots of lovely horses out there, and i am sure you will find one soon if you keep looking, although i found that during christmas many people stop advertising and you may have to wait until the market "refreshes"

I am interested as to why you want to loan a horse rather than buy if you are financially stable and it would be a long term thing?

Headpiece - I can afford to keep another horse, but cannot afford the intial outlay to buy one at present....i.e. £3k to actually get a horse etc...I know there are ones cheaper than this! If I don't find a nice loan horse, I will svae up my pennies and buy one later in the year - just desperate to get riding again really, and I actually miss schooling etc!

I think I am just being a bit impatient to be honest, but perhaps I should give mares a go.....! Us ladies aren't that bad really! :)

I have a few wanted signes up in local tack shops, and have asked word of month....hopefully January 2011 will bring something!

Fingers crossed!

Thank you for all the replies so far.

Lots of horses who would do all that I'm sure, but most tend to be for sale rather than loan im my experience.
