I own a really lovely horse he is 9yo, absolutely perfect in every way, doesnt have a bad bone in his body, fab dressage, and has been successfully eventing at pre novice this season and finishing 7th at his last pre novice with double clear. He has potential to go on to novice level, here is the dilemma, i also have a fab homebred 4yo who is showing exceptional talent and has the potential to go all the way, trouble is i cant really afford to compete two, and it was suggested that i sell my older horse to help fund the younger one... do you think this is the right choice as he really is a gem, but not a worldbeater!

It all depends what you want to do and where you want to go. If your older horse is a sweetie but not going to do the things you want to do then you should sell him. If he is going to be competing at the level you want to be at then sell the youngster.

Well you obviously want to keep the youngster a fair bit to think of selling your old one. I think if the 4yo will take you to bigger places then you probably should sell the 9yo having a good season on his shoulders.
 
Think realistically of where you want to and are capable of going. If you are never going to go above Nov, then why sell the horse that is perfect for that?! We all like the notion of being able to "go all the way" with our super talented horses, but would we actually stand any chance of getting there? If so, then go with the one you will go the furthest with, however if not, stick with the horse that will give you most enjoyment

He sounds fabulous and in your position I know I wouldn't want to let go of him! You do have to think about what you want to do in the future though. If competing is most important to you and you want to go further than he can take you then perhaps you are better to sell. Otherwise, have you thought of putting him out on full or part loan?
 
I am terribly competitive, and yes i personally wouldnt want to go above novice, but i have a friend who is an advanced event rider which could take her up the next levels, and with him being 9 i think maybe i should? just dont want to regret it though! also need the money, so loan no good
 
What about getting a sharer? At least then you could get his shoes covered or part of the cost of keeping him u til you know what the 4 year old is going to be like?
 
If you want to sell him, and sell him well, I would suggest you sell him now, before he hits double figures age wise. You should be able to command a nice sum of money for him that will set your youngster up nicely. Remember, you can never predict what will happen and whether you will regret it - only fate will decide that!
 
Well I've lived in a family where no horse has hung around for ore than a year, apart from B and Oshk, so I've never really had to get attatched. I just think that if you sell the 9yo now having competed PN this season you will get more for it than in 2years time. Im like you, competitive, you have to think where you want to go and what can take you there.
 
i have a bit of advice...win the lottery and keep both...but realistically i would keep the 9 year old...it is hardly old and sounds like it is doing well...you never know what the 4 year old will end up like in a few years!!
 
how about loaning the 9 yr old...see how you go with the youngster and then when you have a little bit more money or have won lots of comps get your 9 yr old back.
I could not really bear selling either of my horses as they too are as good as gold and it is hard to find.
