Am I mean? What rugs are yours in?

Ours are wearing their rainsheets today for the first time this year. Forecast was for rain, but it's currently sunny outside... But with a very cold biting wind so glad they've got something on. They probably would be fine naked still as got plenty (too much) covering and woolly coats, but not for much longer. Clippers coming out this weekend and then they will be in 40g Fal rugs to begin with. Don't normally go up to MW's unless the temperatures really drop.

All rugless and all will remain so for some time yet, when the old boy will get a lightweight.

My mare in sig had a MW put on last night as she was cold (shivering). All the rest are out with no rugs at the moment. The oldies dont get clipped so I will wait a few more weeks. One has a rug to keep him dry and the other to maintain weight. They both have good coats. I dont think I rugged one of them till December last year! The sec b, hardy mountain and moorland pony will be shivering soon so will need a rug even when not clipped!

Her coat is really thin. My old NF lived all year round without a rug unless clipped as she had a really thick coat.

I try not to rug until they are clipped.

Blimey, loads of replies while I have been at work - a couple more heated than I intended.

Tia - agree that rugging shouldn't be hard - but when you are at work all day, you have to try to second guess the weather, which never helps. Also, it has been raining so much in Scotland all summer, and my TB does still have a thin coat, that to not rug them would just result in shivering wrecks.

Spotted cat - thanks for your comments about the futility of the post! However I wasn't asking "what do you do so I can do the same" I was just idly curious. Might I suggest that if the post annoys you the easiest thing to do is ignore it?

I actually know that my TB needs to go up a rug (not much, but it's always so wet and been near freezing the last couple of nights up here) so I was just pondering about whether not wanting to get one dirty for the sake of a few days use was in fact just mean of me!

Chestnut mare - yes please, they need rescued from the mudbath that is their field. It's going to be a long, wet soggy winter

.

Anyway, if we didn't all debate what rugs the horses were wearing, what excuse would we have to go out and buy new ones all the time

You're absolutely right. I always forget this because I am at home all the time and can flip and change rugs as often as the weather, lol! ; I apologise to those who may feel I was a tad sharp.

My ID x is Naked but (well covered!!!) and has a field shelter, her companions, 2 shetlands also naked, My 6 month old filly is naked but my Arab yearling is in a MW and a fleece at night but only because that is what he was used to wearing before I got him 5 weeks ago.

went past yours on way home from yard tonight, in the thunder and torrential rain. M was standing outside quite happily, staring at me, they see my car and expect polos i think. HB must have been hiding in your new fancy field shelter. you are not a mean mummy to build that lovely thing

My dad made it for me:)

I think (without defaming her splendid character) that HB may not be letting M into the shelter, which might explain that scenario

Bit annoying as I specifically got a great big one with two entrances so that they could both use it. I'm sure if it gets cold and wet enough that M will find the use of her teeth/heels and fight for her spot in the dry

Ellie's in a lightweight Masta quilt in the stable, and a lighweight Jumpers turnout in the field

We're clipping next weekend, so it will be duvets and neck covers at the ready!

I never understand these posts, they are totally pointless as far as I can see.

Every horse is different, the shelter in each field is different, the microclimate round each yard is different.

My horse is a TB - not rugged at the moment, everything around him is. Does not mean those people are wrong and I am right or vice versa, it means I own a hot horse in a sheltered paddock who got too hot when I put his lightweight no fill rug on one or two days last week, and who is perfectly warm and happy fluffing his coat up for now. Doesn't mean if I owned another horse I'd do the same with that one.

I don't own any rug heavier than a medium weight for him - even fully clipped in the depths of winter that is enough for him.

As far as I can see, it matters not a jot what everyone else is doing and only that your horse is happy, comfortable and not too hot/cold - better to learn how your horse is happy, when it is uncomfortable (be that too hot or too cold) and deal with it accordingly than to think 'everything else has a rug on/off, I must do the same' - which is an utterly bizarre way to run your life if you ask me!

Totally agree with SC. My mare feels the cold, she always has done. Not sure if this is because she originally came over from Spain but she shivers really badly if she is cold and is miserable. She has been in an old m/w (which is between a m/w & l/w due to its age) during the day if its raining and naked if the sun is shining. At night she is in a proper m/w. Rugging her now does not make it any harder for me to keep her warm when the real winter comes, she never ever sweats up under her rugs and when its sunny and dry she has ample opportunity to have a good roll around.

Everyone's horses are different, just like we feel the cold sometimes and the next person is still in a t shirt. If my horse is cold I'll rug her, if yours is hot and you don't then it does not make either of us in the wrong. Just aware of how individual our horses are

Nice nice daddy

On refelction you might be right about M not being allowed in. i went past today and they were a bit wound up, i stopped and they came bombing over to me. there was a forestry worker over checking that some trees had taken root somewhere. They got a polo each and i waited til he left the field.
