Am I missing something?

Hi All.
I have posted on here a couple of times regarding my beautiful mare and foal, but today I have come to talk about my other horse, Belle. Also, apologies in advance for how long this post may turn out to be.
we bought Belle in October 21 and she is an 8yr old ex racer. When we bought her, she had just been weaned off foal and was ‘ready’ to start reschooling.
During this time, she had the first 2 months off, just adjusting to life, then we starting work with her very slowly after the vet confirmed she was sound and had no concerns about her starting work (just lunging, in hand work etc at first) while we were getting to know her and coming into winter when she’s being stabled,we started suspecting ulcers and decided to have her scoped. Our suspicions were correct and it was confirmed she had quite bad ulcers, started peptizole and sucralfate etc, even started renting our own yard, built stables and moved our girls to the yard where they had all day turn out with incredible grazing. Fast forward another month, we think the medication and change of lifestyle has made a positive impact on her and decide to restart work. All is well, get her fitted for a saddle during the next month and start ridden work (just walk and trot with on road hacking also) along with continuing lunge/long rein. We start to think the saddle we got, while fitted, was not working all to well so opt to swap for an over budget saddle for us which seemed to settle her again and fits her very well. All the while we are continuing paying for ulcer medication. Next month, we Reduce dosage of peptizole and comes off sucralfate, then eventually stop. Within a week we saw her old ulcer symptoms so we stop work, order more peptizole along with the ‘exagus’ supplement only available for vets. We have since restarted and settled her, restarted work (again) and now seems to be settled with only the exagus supplement. We finally think we have found a bit that settled her (ended up being a ported Mullen sweet iron egg but) and then what do you know, today I have the worst ride I think I’ve ever had, she was not very happy about me putting a saddle on and was tense, nappy and out right just stopped towards the end. She never bucked or reared, she just planted her feet as of to say ‘now I’m telling you mum, I need you to get off’ so I got off. I would never try and push her through something if I thought she was in pain. We have not noticed anything different In her behaviour otherwise and she is continuing to be our loving girl in any other way. My partner thinks she may just have been having an off day. But I think I must be missing something here. I would be unsure what I am even searching for at this point. Teeth, saddle, feet, appetite etc are all good so I just don’t know where to start, is it possible I’m just not the rider for her? I bought a second horse as my other mare was coming out of work due to being in foal and I really wanted to advance my riding skills and gain more experience with another horse (I have owned Lady for 8 years now and apart from equine college when I was younger (first 3 years I’ve had Lady) I’ve not really ridden many other horses since. Now I constantly feel stalled and that we’re just not making progress at all. I really miss riding. I love my girls more than anything I do, but we give everything to them and I guess I am just really sad that Belle and I keep getting knocked back.
Does anyone have any advise for me on how I should tackle this situation? I am feeling pretty down in the dumps this evening and unsure where to go next. Thank you so much.

I’d be calling up a physio, or doing a full lameness work up at the vet’s. It’s possible that ulcers reoccured (that’s what it sounds like from your post, correct me if I’m wrong) because there’s an underlying physical issue causing stress. Not at all unlikely for an ex racer.

I think its a go back to the vet job possibly a back and neck x ray? Ulcers can take an awful long time to heal but unfortunately they can often be a secondary problem so I think you may need to investigate further.

It's so shit when this happens it would be so much easier if they could tell you what's wrong ?

One of mine is just not right at the moment after having nearly 6 months off and his my favourite to ride so I really do know how it feels.

As above....Ulcers can develop as a result of pain elsewhere. I would talk to the vet again at first rather than give up on your partnership. Don't worry, you will enjoy horse ownership again and be able to ride again soon. Physio and EDT checks wouldn't be a bad idea either if not done recently.

My bet would be her back. I have a 13h native pony who has always been grouchy to tack up, hard to find a saddle she likes (& I've spent a fortune) & who does cow pats

She had a field injury in Jan and went off to the vets for 3 days. They decided to X ray her spine (she'd slid into a fence) and found quite severe KS just after 18th rib and it's been there a long time With remedial shoes, physio etc she's getting happier in herself but what's interesting is the cow pats have stopped.

She was the picture of health but I'd have placed bets on ulcers

Hope you get to the bottom of it. I understand the frustration - I spent most of last year with 3 injured horses and it's awful

Hi All, sorry for the late reply. Got myself abit down in the dumps and also been really busy at work so only just having chance to read everyone’s great advice.
thank you to everyone who has offered advice. I have got her booked in for a physio assessment next week but in the mean time I will keep an eye on her. She has been lunged since and then off today. She was perfect on the lunge, but then again she always is, I just wanted to check how she was feeling.
I don’t think she is in season as her cycles seem to be pretty obvious and she has never reacted this badly being ridden whilst she’s in the middle of her cycle. I will also look more into pssm as I have not experienced it first hand and will also speak with the vet but I think my next steps will be physio, then x rays if necessary. I just want my girl to be right. She has such a heart of good and it kills me to think that she is in pain in anyway.
I guess even though I’m not really riding right now, I still am so incredibly lucky to have there such gorgeous girlies. I have attached a picture of everyone incase anyone was curious, Belle is the big bay.
Thanks again everyone!

I would bet it’s pain related, and wouldn’t be surprised if the vet finds something in her back/hocks. However, the outcome will be the same, after treatment for whatever it is, there will be in-hand rehab to do. I would do some serious research to find a good rehab/physio person to help you, someone who really understands biomechanics.
Also, saddles, check and double check you have a really good fitter and the saddle is not the cause of her pain.
This probably all sounds scarily expensive, I feel your pain.
And just to say, what an amazing owner you are, what a lucky girl she is.

Thank you so much for your kind words, you have really made my day! I will definitely look into everything you have suggested and just slowly start making my way down the list. I am determined to get to the bottom of things!
especially with costs of living it all is starting to get very expensive! I have two more stables to build this summer also and I’m beginning to wonder how I will afford it all? the things we do for our horses!!
