So I'm going to look at another ponio tomorrow following my last attempt failing the vet.

I've found a 5 yo 're advertised due to time wasters'. The story goes that although this horse has been vetted and passed 2 times that the buyers dropped out for different reasons - neither to do very much with the horse.

This horse is not cheap be any stretch of the imagination and I'm inclined to believe the vendor but mum says he must have failed the vet although the vendor catagorically says he passed both and one with X-rays too... Am I being v naive to go and have a look or does this kinda thing really happen?

Needless to say if I like him is have him independently vetted myself

The thing is, there are lots of time wasters out there, BUT considering the horse is a decent price and each prospective buyer paid for vettings it does seem a little strange.

That being said you would obviously have the horse vetted - go with your eyes open - good luck!

Have to say it does sound a bit dodgy, why would two people pull out after paying for vetting? Have you asked?

I would look but with your eyes wide open, he may have passed but something was picked up which, being an expensive horse, was open to question or interpretation, not all passes are recommended as fit for for purpose but equally there are some extremely fussy people out there who will change their mind on a whim, temperament at vetting is one thing that can be raised while not actually failing a horse, I would check for things like sarcoids the horse could pass but if a small one is found that can be enough to make people pull out.

Tire kickers don't generally go through the trouble and expense (especially plus xrays, thats not pocket change) of a vetting to change their minds if the vetting is satisfactory.

But yes, can see it happening that circumstances can change after the vetting and people do change their minds.

Twice, though? During the (attempted) sale of ONE horse? Hmmmm. That does sound unlikely.

(Also, the whole 'readvertised due to timewasters' thing really gets my goat. It seems with some people if you decide not to buy their horse you are automatically a 'timewaster'. And as I say, tire-kickers tend not to go as far as paying for vettings and xrays...)

Agree totally. I wouldn’t believe a danged thing any seller told me these days unless the seller was a known quantity - eg friend of a friend, through RC, known by RI etc.

If you need to convince you mum why not see if the seller can get hold of one or other of the vets certificates - yes I know they belong to the people who pulled out but if they genuinely pulled out becasue (they lost their job, they got divorced, they got ill, they changed their mind about what kind of competing they wanted to do etc. - there are some fairly good reasons for pulling out after paying for a vetting - all be it not that common) they they might be willing to give a copy to the seller as a sort of apology for having to mess them around.
Worth an ask

I'd still get my own vetting done but it would help reassure your mum.

Equally think why would the seller feel the need to tell you he'd been vetted twice, if I was selling and he failed the vet I might find an excuse for him having been on the market for so long (timewasters is always a good one) but I certainly wouldn't admit that he'd been vetted (unless you were really green as grass and I thought I could convince you not to vet him because I told you he'd been done recently - can't imagine many people fall for that with no evidence at all!)

I would certainly be suspicious of TWO buyers pulling out after vetting - that sounds like he failed the vetting or had enough ?? to give buyers second thoughts. I've only had one buyer pull out after a vetting - and that was in fact after a trial period (it was the London Mounted police) when she apparently 'didn't like pedestrians'. That was rubbish - it HAD to be the way they were approaching pedestrians with her because she's never minded them before or after!

Surely if the vettings were the issue with previous buyers, the seller simply wouldn't mention the horse had been through 2x vettings to other prospective buyers?
I don't see the harm in going to look.
if she has nothing to hide, you could potentially ask for numbers of the buyers who pulled out?

I would go and see the horse but suss out the sellers as much as I could. Perhaps they are being a bit controlling or a bit of a nightmare leading to people pulling out of the sale.

I had two buyers pull out after vetting. First one had her 2 stage, she passed and that afternoon they were offered a good pony club pony very well known to themso went for that instead.
Second one knew about her hay allergy before vetting, this was again mentioned at vetting and vet and buyer very happy that she just needed to be fed haylage, after she passed the vet they just dissapeared, I couldn't contact them. They left stuff at my yard too and never collected it! Third time lucky I sold her with 5 stage vet to fabulous home where I still get updates a year on :) .

So sometimes there are exceptional circumstances! Go see, take a knowledgable person and question the seller!

If you like the horse I suggest you ask the seller which vets the previous buyers used. That should flush out whether there really was a failed vetting as the seller wont want you using the same vets again.
