you should not be paying that full stop, i know it is hard when your mum thinks you should do something you dont wanna do, a loan would be ideal and with the credit crunch your 25 could go along way for someone
the riding school my little girl was at would not let them canter, so we changed.
now she canters can can jump 1 and half foot on her pony, i will add she is only five. so it can be done.
is your mum horsey as mine was not which was hard
[ QUOTE ] I have learnt how to canter from my friend and it's obvious i'm ready!!!And whenever we're out on a ride which I rarely do go out on everyone else but me canters and its stupid,
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm confused by this. If everybody else canters, why don't you?
Seriously, they are taking the P and you need to look elsewhere.
No, she wont let us the horses are trekkers and dont move in the school by thereselfs...
I was made to stay back by myself while everyone else went on a three hour ride and it was I who had to muck out, groom feed and water the horses by myself with no help!
My mam loves horses she used to loan one but had to give her up.. way back when(!)
Im gonna do shxt all tomorrow in the stable, to see who actually picks up the muck, waters the horses and feeds them.
I wasnt told to shut the door the other day when I was made to go and get DRAW REINS for two horses who where jumping and two horses got tied up incorrectly they got of and made their way into the feed rooma and eat 4 big feeds and I was getting accused of trying to kill the horses!!!

Riders insurance included = TO GET INSURED FOR WHAT TROTTING ONCE IN AN HOUR!
We've only recently allowed kids to help us after a lot of discussion due to not having a real need for them as we can quite happily run lessons without helpers. We didn't have helpers for about two years and managed fine. It is a bonus to have helpers to lead but not a neccessity and the business is not dependant on them.
Our helpers are definately not badly treated and have regular breaks and free snacks, drinks etc if they are there for a morning or afternoon and if they choose to stay all day they have a free lunch when on their hours lunch break. The helpers lead for two half hour lessons in the morning and two half hour lessons in the afternoon. We have a waiting list of helpers wanting to come from other yards in the area as we don't treat them like skivvies even though on those yards they ride but we have told them they won't ride apart from on very rare occassions. They muck out a maximum of two pony stalls and spend the rest of their time grooming, haying, watering and get to be taught how to lunge and long rein, the helpers are currently being shown how we back and break-in horses which they wouldn't get from being in a lesson or helping in some other riding schools.
I also wasn't saying we don't have child protection, first aid etc anyway but meant that the money the helpers pay could be going towards funding for things like that.
Getting back on topic now, Melanie, I would really find some where else to go that has a good reputation and doesn't take it's helpers for granted as it sounds quite awful- and personally, I'd love to see a lesson with 15 pupils in it! - it has plenty of potential to be very unsafe and the amount you learn in that lesson must be pretty small.
To be honest with you, i would get off there quick and find somewhere nicer or get yourself a decent share for £25 a week! I know id be gratefull of the help and the money at the moment!
It sounds like you need to talk to the yard and explain that you are prepared to pay for your lessons (if you are) but are no longer prepared to do the yard jobs for free.
Why don't you offer to do some yard jobs as it helps you learn/you enjoy it in return for a free lesson every month?
okay, with horses you never stop learning the basics. There's loads to learn about walk and trot, but everyone gets bored sticking to the same thing all the time.
I'm not about to argue about why you're paying to help out, but if you're unhappy you won't learn, so time to move on. (BTW perhaps slagging off the school from the link shown wasnt such a great idea...)
anyway, moving swiftly onwards, is there anyone in your area who has horses? any studs? showing yards? perhaps look in yellow pages...
I know a few places will take on keen teenagers to help out in return for the odd lesson or ride or even just experience. The thing is with horses, it's always long hours and often very little or no pay (even in the way of lessons / rides).
You'll need rider insurance which i think is about £6 a month.
Or what about this exmoor? explain to mum that the insurance is £6 a month and what you're saving at the RS perhaps you could have an instructor come teach you once a month?
I have to ask; how long a lesson do you get for the 25 pounds? Do you go to the stables one day per week and ride on this day? Or do you go Saturdays and Sundays?
I also have to say; having owned and run a trail riding business for a few years, I frequently had people come who said they could ride. They would come a number of times and each time they would ask to canter. I have ridden for 40 years and I can tell immediately whether someone is capable of cantering correctly and safely. If they are singling you out from a crowd of little children, whereby these little children all are allowed to canter but you are not ... sorry but that speaks volumes to me.
I think the best thing you can do is just stop going there. To be honest, the minute they check their views on their website and see the link from HHO, I imagine your troubles may be over and you won't have to say anything to them.
Melanie, you need to find somewhere else to ride hun. Gill Lister does lessons, how about giving her a ring? Shes really good, she got me jumping on Star. The horse thats up for loan is on my yard too and she's got someone coming to look at her tomorrow, I have a feeling she might be a bit of a handful for you anyway. Like I said in my PM, you can come and help me at some shows this year if you want. Keep your chin up x

I agree, especially given the later comments form OP.
I don't understand why she just does not go elsewhere?

That was my thoughts too when I read the OP's post. Maybe you think you're ready but your instructor doesn't.
I don't think you are paying to muck out, you are paying for a lesson and helping out on the yard for free.
Having worked in 7 different riding schools, we always had un paid helpers. They would pay for a lesson and also help on the yard and lead in lessons.
They would usually get a free ride, but that depended on how much they helped.
Maybe the girl's that get work for rides are more capable workers, that's why they are getting picked for this.
Anyway if you're so unhappy there, I would find somewhere else to go
For what its worth..... if the others are cantering and you are not, then maybe you are not as capable as you think you are.... If you are being taken for granted then maybe it is due to your attitude...... to me you are coming across as being a bit full of yourself. Maybe they are depriving you because of this.....
But all in all this yard sounds like a pile of poo and you will learn little if you are not allowed to join in for whatever reason!!!
The yard sounds unregulated and unsafe, so not sure how it is continuing to exist at all
I went there in the summer and was less than impressed.
I live in west cumbria too, you would think for the countryside there would be more horse places or loans!

Hi, to have lessons with this instructer, do you need to own a horse? Thanks
