I recently had my mare back shoes off due to the fact shes not been in much work. She not got bad feet but seems a little foot sore now, its been nearly 6 weeks as farrier is out this satuarday but cant decided wether to put them back on or not???
BUT, there are issues.
Not sure if u read my last post but shes got what looks like a windgall injury on off-hind leg. Also not sure if have shoes off has caused this, but shes also one to gallop around field on solid/frozen/slippery ground, so who's to know i guess?!!!!!
I Did have vet out too as was a little concerned as swelling didint really go down and wasn't tracking up as she normally does. Vet said nothing to worrie about, shes prob twisted it out in field and slipped (as shes not keen on me touching her thigh neither). I have ridden her but still doesn't seem 100% not sure if this is bcos shes footsore or bcos of injury

I have farrier out sat, and physio Tue if nothing found i will prob get vet back out to scan or something. I was at ease earlier on but i googled it and so many simular cases came up like this and turned out to be something a lot more serious.

They can stay footsore for quite a while after having shoes off. I recently did this with my mare, and my farrier told me not to worry for at least 2 weeks.

I should imagine she was "normal" footsore, but then the ground froze and she's probably become a bit sore from that. My mare was very sore on the frozen ground, but as soon as it softened up, she's sound again and fly bucking her way round the field.

Have a chat with your farrier, see what he thinks. Perhaps you could put her shoes back on and see how she is - would at least eliminate other causes and put your mind at rest.

Have you thought about hiring some hoof boots to test your footsore theory? The saddlery shop in Kent hire them out, so cheaper than buying some - if you choose to buy, they knock the hire off the sale price.

It could be your mares tendon sheath that is inflammed which could look like a windgall especially if she is still unsound. If thats the case he might medicate it which is what happened to my horse. He pecked on landing over the steeplechase fence on the 3 day event at Milton Keynes and thats what I think caused it. It looked like his windgall was up the next day but because he was practically in all the time (obviously no turn out when you are away in temporary stables I put it down to filled legs). It wasn't till we got home the next day after the showjumping that his windgall was up like a baloon so I got the vet out.
