Am I over reacting?

Today I volunteered to do my riding club help day. I'm new to the area and very new to the club having only done one of their competitions so far. I was actually quite looking forwards to today as I don't know many people locally and was hoping to meet a few people and make some horsey friends!

When I get there I met a lady who was in the same position as me. We had a quick hello chat when an official looking lady came up and sarcastically said "Here for a help day, want to help then?!". Being new to the club I didn't know what I was ment to do and was hardly skiving! So we drag all the jumps out and for the next 5 hours I stand on the doors letting people in and out, putting fallen poles up and measuring all the jumps before each class. Not once in those 5 hours did anyone but the lady I initially met try to make conversation and when I tried I was blanked or brushed off. At one point I was measuring jumps with a stick when a lady shouted "oi stick girl". Even worse I have my name in big letters on the back of my jacket. I came away feeling so upset and unwelcome!

Am I over reacting or would it annoy you too?

That would annoy me too, after all you are giving up your valuable time for free. Obviously there will times when its too busy to chat, but I'm sure that won't have been all the time. Didn't they thank you at the end?

No, i don't think you are over reacting.
If there is one thing i cannot stand it is ignorant people who think they are better than you just because your job is lower down the food chain than theirs.

You do not deserve to be called 'stick girl', i should make a complaint perhaps, being me, though i am turning into a grumpy old woman, and don't stand for as much these days, you do not have to stand for rubbish like this.

Not at all, you worked for free and they should appreciate that, sounds like they showed no gratitude whatsoever and that their social skills are a bit lacking!
I hope you find some better horsey friends in your area soon, is there another riding club you can join?

Blimey whats a help day?

Find another RC, we wouldn't dare of treating a new member like that even tho comps can get a bit stressful sometimes. We like to treat them as a chance for everyone to have friendly chats aswell.

Were you fed and watered? We are so pleased to get anyone to help for anything they are intensely thanked fed well and often go home with flowers!- and we try and introduce new members to others.

How rude ! Is there another RC near you as I wouldn't want to go back to them if that's how they behave, as Lavender said "what a miserable lot"

YES it would blooming bother me!! stuck up miserable gits!! Thats not what you want when your a newcomer. what a shame. AND IF ANYONE CALLED ME STICK GIRL...well, i would have shoved that stick....cough cough...and gone home!!!! the cheek of it!!! maybe theres another club in your area who welcomes newcomers with a friendly smile?

I'm half tempted to send an email to the help day organizer. My horse is actually lame at the moment and I am free every weekend and had I enjoyed myself today would have been happy to do it regularly till she is sound for a bit of company but I wont bother!

you wonder why you bother when things like that happen.

i wld be annoyed about it too.

i might give them one more chance to show that their behaviour was not the norm but if they were like that a second time....... well they'd get a piece of my mind!

This is why I don't to RC anymore - I have had similar experiences, they moan that it is the same few who help all the time but then treat you like dirt when you do offer your assistance. Don't get me wrong, I not expecting a medal, or even a thank-you but a loo break, the odd cup of tea and the occassional " is everything OK?" goes a long way.

Im not surprised you were upset, what a horrible way to be treated. What area are you in ? Are there other RCs where you could meet people ?

I'm in north wales. there is another club but this club does more of what I want. Although having said that my horse is now lame and its unlikely i will be competitng there for some time

Im sorry but "stick girl" Surely there are more polite ways to get someones attention!!

I'd definatly say something to them. They wont even know how bad they have been towards you until you say something.

Not over reacting at all, stuck up miserable cows!
I find that some of these Riding Club organisers start to believe in their own importance and turn into vile mini hitlers.

Would defo complain

I agree with this.

I think you SHOULD!! Not only are they being incredibly ungrateful, they're also shockingly rude!!

I would have told them to shove their club up trheir arse!!! Go and find another club!!

I would be absolutely fuming, and despite not one for confrontations I would have said something or emailed them that is disgraceful. Really feel for you, that would make me feel very upset.

No I would say you are under reacting! To not even have the courtesy to make sure you are looked after with tea/coffee etc when you have given up your time if appalling! As for the 'stick girl' as others have said I would have told them what they could do with their stick, downed tools immediately only stopping off to tell organisers why I was leaving. There is absolutely no excuse for bad manners who ever and where ever they are.
