My horse was "prescribed" three months box rest last week. I want to know if im overfeeding.
She has 10 lb of hay in a morning and 15 lb on a night, she also has a handful of chaff and quiet mix with garlic twice a day (to put her medication in). She doesn't look overweight and she does tend to run off quite suddenly.
In your opinion (no harshness please :D) am i overfeeding?

Sounds good to me. Just make sure that she gets her vitamins & minerals either as a lick block or as a balancer.

She may look like she is dropping off when muscle tone goes, so do expect that - it will come back when she goes back into work.

The best way to know how she is doing is to put a weigh tape around her each week.

We always fed our box rest horses adlib hay - if she is getting through her hay fast then put the hay in a small holed haynet - that will keep her busy.

i would split the hay into am/lunch/afternoon/evening rations. i would only be feeding hay and water on box rest. how does she run off suddenly if she is on box rest? i wouldnt be feeding any kind of mix. if you have to bucket feed i would go for a lite chaff and vits/garlic. Good luck on the box rest.

i cant explain it shes really strange, if she's stabled full time she seems to run off, whereas on grass she maintains a good weight. she's wormed/ vaccd etc. just a weird horsey i suppose (she's a m/w cob so should really be fat!). thanks :)

I to would split the hay into Breaky, Lunch and dinner. It means its not all being scoffed in one meal :) I would also ditch the mix and just feed some unmolassed chaff with a vit and min supplement or balancer. Good luck with the box rest :)
