Is it me or i'm an old fart (answers on postcard) BUT at my yard my friends always has young helpers, BUT she can't keep them, as they just don't want to be out in cold, rain, doing loan pony before school etc...

She is not horrible nor nasty and they do get to ride good quaility animals. What seams to be missing is the 'gumption ' to knuck down and be commitment.

Reading on here that some young folk are brilliant etc... but are you in the minority and is it that younger folk are NOT as commitment or have more disatractions????

or do i have my rose tint glasses on?

I am 25, and I have to say I am regularly disappointed by my generation! I am the youngest person in our company because everyone who has been employed apart from me under the age of 30 has hardly lasted any time at all! One got offered the job and just never showed up, didn't write, call, refused to answer his phone until we spoke to his MUM - I mean, seriously, he was 25!! (this is a design job, not some kind of casual weekend work!), another was stealing money, aother kept falling asleep at his desk (and yes, I do mean actually fast asleep!)
Obviously I like to think I am different, as are my friends, but I do think a lot of people my age are pretty hopeless! And a worrying number don't seem capable of communicating with anyone apart from their friends etc, and even then only in txt spk!!
ETS Spelling - oops!

Yes I would agree- so many kids on the last yard i had shadow at had ponies on full livery as they just didnt want to do anything except riding or grooming- or their poor mums were doing it for them. When i was still at school i worked at a yard doing full livery horses to pay for my DIY ponies!

i know what you mean , as i kid i would do yard stuff all day for the chance to play with the ponies , getting to ride was a bonus!

youngsters , & some not so young , that are prepared to put in that amount of effort these days seem a rare breed , there are plenty of would be loaners who are unreliable , & expect not to have to do chores or make a financial contribution

but guess the situation is common through society in general

ooo i'm glad, i'm not only one who think that society has changed for the worst IMO - blooming hell, now sounding blooming defo old fart stuff

Would like to think I am not like that

. Yesterday, when it was peeing it down with rain, I really felt like just buggering off home LOL!

When I was down a riding school helping out, everyone down there was 100% commited, if you weren't you would soon be told! You had to be, as there wasn't usually time to sit around and have a breather (except lunch obviously) and if you did just sit around and do nothing, for the most part you wouldn't feel like you fitted in as we tended to get p***ed off with people if they just sat on their backsides.
However, I do think there are a minority of people of my generation that just can't be bothered and would much rather be out and about.
Maybe I am just sad

Not just youngsters but people in general seem lazier these days

I would definitely agree with that. I know that I look for the easy-option, however as an old fart and a business owner, I still have what it takes to get out there and do whatever needs doing and whenever it needs doing, to a decent standard.

On my yard, most of my people are older however I do have 3 young girls (early 20's) and although they do come and see their horses a few times a week, they don't really seem to be that into the horses.

Then I have an old geezer who comes to see his horse every single day, come rain or shine, and he will spend hours here pootling around with her.

Then I have a couple who come up nearly every day but they don't do a whole lot however they do spend time with their horse grooming her and going for short rides.

The rest are aged between 30 and 65 and I barely ever see them. They come up once every few months and don't do a whole lot when they come here.

I'm lucky that my guys are all nice people and when they do come both they and I enjoy the company. I feel they like the social aspect of the horse world a little more than the actual ownership.

Every time I have employed helpers here I have been surprised at how little muscle-power they put into their work.....hence I generally prefer to do most of it myself and only use them for real rubbish jobs like stacking millions of bales of hay!!

) and I see it!!!
Kids that 'dont od mucking out' and those that just plain cant and dont see the point in learning. They are lazy and take shortcuts and just cant be bothered!
Like the girl who used to share my horse, didn't bother mucking out - just shucked new straw on top knowing I would sort it and I would - but it would mean that I never had time to ride!!!

I think that in my area the riding schools are partly to blame as kids turn up, ride then go - and they think that its always going to be like that! THey dont mess about learning new things!

I was telling some how I used to work 5 1/2 days a week 8am-6pm for 81p an hour - that was 8 years ago! I was regularly standing outside getting cold, or sweeping or walking horses back and forth from the Main stable to the breaking yard and that was a 1m round trip 5/6 times an afternoon - just continual. then cleaning tack, grooming etc etc.

You would never catch then doing that now!

definately agree with you, when i was in school (10yrs ago admitedly) i used to get up on a morning and do my ponies, then run (yes, run... with the dog) up the road (read bl**dy enormous hill) to a neighbours place to do their horses (2 massive clydies and a couple of hunters) and run home again (much easier down the hill) before changing and going to school. would repeat it in the evening.... and now, when i could do with a local kid to just feed my 2 boys on a morning (nothing else, cos they're out) i can't find anyone to help me, even when i proffer decent money and rides and even lessons in return. i never got rides, or lessons or owt, only a little pocket money at christmas, i just did it.

*grump, scowl, rant* sorry.
