Am I really that big?

Good example in photo below of how breeds differ....both boys pictured are same breed (IDxTB), they are about 2 inches different in height and about a foot in length! Compact horse on the left is 18, has had a good working life, no back issues....my horse on the right...bless him...is low mileage and has a tendency to get sore in his back behind the saddle, even with my comparatively light weight.

We have a couple of lady like yourself on our yard like yourself and they dont have any problems with there horses. one rides a 16 hand ID mare and the other rides a 15.1 shire mare. The horses never have a problem and always come back from rides rareing to go again. A man i know has just bought himself a fell pony, traditionally they were bred to cary up to 20 stone, though as you are a similar height to myself you may be a little underhorsed. good luck in your search.

I'm 17 stone (losing 2 stone by summer...really) and am 6'1' or so. I ride a 16.2 hand Percheron/Saddlebred cross as a jumper/hunter and a 16.1 hand gaited mule for something novel. They do fine.

There is also weight and weight....a bunch of sloppy fat is different on a horse's back than a rider who is in shape and doesn't interfere with the horse.

Good luck.

I know some small light riders that weight 30 stone for their horse because of the way they ride, and some larger riders that ride lightly and make it easy for their horses.

A poor and thoughtless rider is always heavier to carry.
