Am i right or wrong?? Showing Related

Yeah I don't think you can really expect much from unaffil anything!

That's right - look down on those of us who do local shows and enjoy unaffilated shows. I regularly compete in unaffiliated dressage and nearly always beat those who compete affiliated AND at a higher level than me, so please don't look down your noses. I choose to do unaffilated because I prefer the fact that people tend to be friendlier and more helpful and don't turn their noses up at people who don't have HOYS qualifying horses. By this comment you have proven what a lot of people already thing about showing people - supercilious snobs!

There most certainly ARE tack rules for turnout classes, I answered this on the other thread to have copied it here.

urnout should be:

If a native or unplaited horse:

A saddle that fits, preferably leather but I would prefer a clean well fitted synthetic to a dirty ill fitting leather one.
Pelham with TWO reins or either a double or a snaffle
NO coloured browbands
No numnah or if one has to be used make sure it is discreet and either black or brown
Tack should preferably be brown but black is acceptable at local level
Girths should be leather or if webbing it should match the horse as closely as possible - bay or chestnut - brown, greys - white and blacks - black.

The rider:

Tweed jacket
Velvet hat to suit jacket
Tan or brown gloves (not navy or black no matter what colour your jacket is!)
Showing cane
Cream or canary jods
Adults - long boots (can be brown or black) and spurs or dummy spurs
Juniors can wear jod boots (with joddie clips!)
Shirt and tie.
NO button hole

Plaited horse:

As above but, depending on the type, a coloured browband is correct

Rider:

Again as above but blue jacket and a button hole (to match browband if worn)

Needless to say, everything (including your stirrup irons) should be cleaned to within an inch of it's life and, if your tack is new, make sure it is well oiled! Oh and dont forget to clean the soles of your boots!

Thanks, why can't a native horse where coloured browband?

Awwww don't get yourself wound up hun, i do unaffiliated and love it. Affiliated to scary for me :p x

martingales, dutch gags and flashes are fine for WH classes, but not for flat showing....let me guess - you were down the line behind totally incorrectly turned out horses and ponies at a local show...??!!!

I was well down the line below FILTHY DISGUSTING ponies think yellow socks, dirt and dust everywhere, one in a nosebandless bridle, one in parelli gear.....why - because my mare is hogged and the judge didn't like it - despite the fact her tack was faultless, and spotless....will NEVER, EVER do BTO again, especially after the judge said my cob was ugly...

Again I replied on the other thread but.......................

When you show in a BTO class, you show to the breed standard or type of your chosen horse, natives, hunters, cobs, etc never ever wear coloured browbands and are always shown in tweed jackets, tradition dictates that buttonholes are not worn with tweed. Riding horse, Hack, PBArabs or Show Pony types are always shown in Navy (never ever ever black!) and it is correct to have a coloured browband and buttonhole - this probably harks back to past times when gentry rode this type of animal.

OMG thats so rude!!! I bet she is gorgeous :D I have been so hurt by a judge i even cried

I have really been put off showing especially where i went today!! x

I think it does depend on the show as to how far they bend the rules... I went to a show, entered the coloured class (for duns, roans etc...) with my Dun pony. My YO went in with his palomino shetland, we were the only 2 in the class to begin with. There was a late entry who was placed first in the end... yep you've guessed it, said winning pony was a Dark bay with white socks!!! Pony owner knew the Judge!

Aw Thank you... I think he's gorgeous too, but i'm biased... lol I dont go to that show anymore, as it happens over and over... one lady who won all her classes on another occasion with a stiff horse was the stewards wife! I stick to my small local friendly riding club shows now (unless showing my youngster), they're a lot nicer and more willing to give, help support and feedback. :-)

Sorry but black is a big no no as are white jods. I was trained/drilled by a very scary and stern showing doyen who had various sayings, one of which was 'there is no place for a black jacket in a showring, a black jacket should only ever be seen in a dressage or showjumping arena' another one was 'only ever wear tan gloves, blue or black mark you out as an amateur immediately'

I can only surmise that no one has said anything because they don't know the standards for turnout.

Hehe i agree all your horses are gorgeous :D I know some wonderful judges but i know loads of horrible ones. I have even cried before in the show ring as one judge was very rude to me!!! :( x

I have a quick question re showing. My daughter entered an equitation class recently, and on the schedule it stated no artificial aids (whips spurs etc). There were 2 competitors in the class carrying show canes..............are they not classed as artificial aids aswell?

Technically they are artificial aids, in reality they are about as much use as a chocolate teapot and are for show as much as anything, however imho they should not have been carrying them.

We've all got to start somewhere and surely that is what local shows are for - encouraging you to go on to bigger and better things. If local shows are run badly they put people off and so stop them from trying to move on.

I think it is as important that local shows demand the same standards of turnout and performance and give feedback against these standards to help their members improve - after all improvement is what riding clubs were set up for.

I get annoyed when I see judges allowing people to break rules and still place them - i'm all for encouragement and perhaps even turning a blind eye to a small misdomenor in the name of encouragement - but actually allowing something that would end up with that individual embarassing themselves at a bigger show and not telling them I think is wrong!

Sorry for the rant! ;)
