Am I the only one who thinks this?

I see so many kids where I ride being squeezed into body protectors, which is very commendably and everything, but am I the only one who thinks stocks should be compulsory?

I know they are a pain to tie when you are not used to them, but we all know who they can provide neck support in a fall. We put so much emphasis on hats etc, but in my mind the simple wearing of a stock could easily help to prevent injury.
 
i didnt think that they did. i think they tick more boxes under aesthetic purpose as opposed to protection. x
 
Sorry I thought it was something that was generally accepted, I cant find any thing specific now, but will look for a paper later when I have more time. In the meantime:

The ready tied ones are no good really but the good quality traditional ones are pretty supportive, but definitely better than nothing.
 
Compulsory for when exactly? Just competitions or would you like to see the them become as second hand as putting a hat on nowadays?
Children are meant to be in ties and I cant see a child wanting to ride around whilst being throttled by a stock the parent has done up to tightly.
I agree there is some support there but I dont think anywhere near enough to become compulsory.
 
However, I agree I think proper (self tied, not the ready tied type) should be compulsory for all types of jumping competiton. This is due to the support offered to the neck.

can also be used for emergency repair to rein/stirrup/girth,use as a bandage,a tourniquet,and prob lots mire.

For the hunting field, yes. That wasn't the issue. If I was riding round the school and my rein/stirrup/girth broke, I'd probably get off and go get another one. Similarly, if my horse or another rider needed a bandage/tourniquet, then I'd go to the first aid kit, and not continue riding.

I fail to see how a piece of cotton loose round the neck will support it - in case of neck injury the neck has to be held completely still to stop ANY movement. A stock will not prevent whiplash as the force exerted in such an event is enough to bend cotton round the neck.
 
The sort of neck injuries I have seen as a result of bad horse falls there is no way a stock would protect against. In fact the last horse rider we had through with a fracture of a cervical vertabrae had been wearing a stock.....it was a right PITA trying to image the neck clearly as the stock kept showing up on the images

yep...absolutely....you'd need significant ptotection to avoid a serious neck injury..a .hard c-spine collar or something...a bit of material, however you choose to tie it, will not stop you getting a broken neck...its due the mechanism of injury i.e - slamming your head into the floor....

I have used a 'proper' stock before and the way I had to have it tied to allow me to actually move my neck and breathe was about as tight as a scarf, so I cannot see how it would offer any support at all!

It is only a matter of time before we have to wear those foam neck collars rally drivers wear!
 
I dont really see how they can protect you much in a fall.

At the BHS XC Finals you have to wear a stock, which is a PITA to be honest especially when its under a body protector.
