Am I the only one who...

I dont not like cobs, but i would never buy one myself. I much prefer the finer bred horse. I do however see the need for them and see why people do love them.

All horses have their place

hhhmmm, a little to opinionated and if not a little judgmental. I have a very heavy cob x suffolk - chesnut by the way not bay ! all I can say is that you have not experienced one. Not all are clumsy or badly put together or your plodding hack.

And as for why breed them, prob cause in this climate they are the best sellers as they are lower maintenance and lower vet bills and will happily live out with minimum rugs.

TBs do nothing for me but that is my opinion and I keep it to myself, rather than cause upset.

...dislikes cobs and any other large, clumsy horses or ponies? don't hate them, I do like the heavy types (got a Fjord myself). But most of the cobs are: Bay, big head and have a clumsy build. They are sometimes the most rediculous cross of breeds.
And still people keep breeding the most rediculous crosses, but the economy sucks! So why?!

:p

Oh boy! Note to self, come back and watch this one! :D

Will this get the same result, as it surely would have, if you'd said you dislike arabs? A horse is a horse is a horse, jolly boring if we all liked the same thing, the world would be packed with, what is it you breed for example? Sport horses?

I think this old girl is a rather interesting crossbreed, all 16h of her!
She's called Bertha and lives just up the road from me.

I think why I dislike them is because Cobs (or chunky horses) are hated over here. I just have been brainwashed by the cob-haters and it's normal over here. Everyone and everything is a warmblood.

...........and you agree with everything that everyone else says, how dreary

- Geldings/stallions like big bums, and lots of mane/tail :D

- They are not clumsy, my purebred fine welsh is the clumsiest horse ive ever met!

- They are gorgeous

- Everyone wants one ?? Funny that :p

- You can get a finer tb, ish for cheap, a cob will cost you £3500 + and then even more for one whos done a bit!

- Stronger, more stamina, more trainable, i could go on for hours :D

- Personally i would never go for anything without a little bit of cobbyness, like my mare ..

i love cobs and have owned many! i love their spirit yet steadiness, thier lovely temperament with a bit of cheek. However i do not like the Gypsy Vanner cobs as they are way too heavy for me personally. I agree some heavy set horse can have quite ugly roman noses but i think overall cobs are the 'steady eddy'

I wouldn't buy a cob for myself, purely because they are not ideal for what I want to do.

Having said that I have had a brilliant connieX/ cob type pony who was the scopiest pony I've ever sat on, took him hunting, and only two people jumped this hedge, (a good 5 ft something high, and twice as wide!), one was me, the other was a man who's horse landed in the middle, and scrabbled out (he fell off). I've also brought on a fun Welsh Sec D who was awesome. For certain jobs they are perfect for some people.

I don't like cobs. I find them utterly boring and slow. Even a fast moving cob doesn't move particularly fast. And if they do have a lot of life in them, i guess i find it a bit intimidating as they're so heavy to be messing about. Plus from what i've seen it usually comes out as being bolshy. BUT! I can appreciate a *good* cob when i see one. A nice show cob, or traditional. As long as it's not so top heavy from a big head that it looks likely to topple face first into the mud. There's a horse for everyone. Just mines an Arab :D

I don't count Welsh D's as cobs in my mind. Not modern ones anyway, there's not much cobby about them and half of them are bonkers. I think there's a bit too much arab in them for them to be a cob nowadays. I like them to be honest, but not as a cob. Apart from ones like FiHunt's, propper stocky old types, definitely cobby then, and i still like them.

Well look at the number of poor and unuseable warmbloods bred on the continent.Soon some of Totilas will add to it.The sort not talented enough for the professionals who can handle and ride them, but way too sharp and quirky for more amateur homes. And you will notice I said MORE amateur homes, not total amateurs.

Are they any good then? Warmblood, sounds wishy washy really, neither hot, nor cold. Bit of a crossbreed really aren't they? Bit of Tb, bit of this that and the other...

Naughty enfys!! Now I have a tea/keyboard incident to deal with....

TBH, I don’t know why everyone doesn’t want a nice quality middleweight like mine (IDxTB)!! Well I do, but for what I want to do (hunt/event/SJ.. bit of whatever!) a nice MW type has the best of both worlds – plenty of ability and power but aren’t going to break too easily. :)

Oh wow! More about these wonderful mules please! Proper big work mules are very rare in this country. In the US they are much more commonplace and come in all colours too..would love to own one.

Well my personal taste I dont like heavy weight cobs to look at, but i think thats because im not a fan of hogged manes, with manes they look better.

I did say id never have another cob due to past experiences and it wasnt being a plod the thing was a powerhouse, but ive just had a cob foal, having said that she has a petite head, its really personal choice I think, everyone likes different horses for different reasons.

With my lot the Warmblood has the best on the ground temperament but is exceptionally mardy, the welsh is super stubborn but puts up with alot, the cob well only a baby shes already trying to push her boundaries and use her front legs to box with! LOL Love them all :)

These are in Canada, spent most of their lives working the fields for the Mennonites, friends bought them from the killpens at the stockyards. They are ridable and really lovely animals, not sure about their breeding, probably Percheron in there - somewhere.

They have huge mules in Lot where my Mother lives in France too.

I think it's the part of the world you live in but there is nothing wrong with it, I suppose the more used to a certain type of horse, the easier on the eyes they are, although your cobby types will differ from the ones over here in the UK or other countries too I guess, think our cobs are perhaps a tad lighter and smaller than the ones in your neck of the woods, if I'm thinking on the right sort of lines.

Having said that, some people have different views of what a cob is or how heavy they should be, too many people call their ponies/horses cobs when in fact they just look like a bit of a heavy crossbred.

I a real nice cob even if your not into the heaver types can win you over if you see them in the flesh, some of the do get some bad press, people tend to think cobs of being overweight lazy crossbreds, indeed many are, but some are wonderful things to ride.

I think I have the best of both worlds with my pony! He's an Irish cobxTB, so he's got beautifully even coloured markings, plenty of bone and a rather big bum that's super for jumping from his cob side ;) but his TBness gives him a very forward going attitude, no hairy feathers and lovely paces and a fab dressage brain :D but he also has a smidgen of cob stubborness and quite alot of TB nuttiness :L
I don't know if I'd like a very heavy weight cob though, tempermant wise I'm sure they're lovely, bit I don't know if I could keep all that feather clean :D

Who says their not loveable and sweet?! Their characters are fantastic, got to say that, but why breed with a cob (or a chunky clumsy built horse)?! And the horsemarket isn't doing very well either.

I havent read your full tread but in reply to this comment -

Why breed with what you call a "chunky clumsy built horse"? would this include the clydesdale, one of the old working breeds? I have a CD x TB and I wouldnt change him for the world! He has a fantastic attitude - which comes from his CD mother. I know this as his brother shares the same attitude. And more so - Has no medical issues, no soundness problems and is SANE! thats the kind of horse that always sells well - matter the market.

I am another member of the anti-ob brigade. I have tried, had some in for breaking, schooling an I can safely say i strongly dislike 'em. Too clunky for me. Just my taste.

*runs and hides from cob loving brigade*
