Am i the only one?

Mine is allowed on the sofa and bed- its a damn cold house, either that or turn the heating on!

he's a DOG give him a nice comfy bed of his own and a blanket! if its so cold does that mean you let him under the duvet in the bed too?

sorry, each to his own and everything but YUCK ! :D

So you're in the room, she doesn't lie on the sofa, you're not and she does and when she is discovered she gets a smack on the bum and verbal.
The rest of the time when she is lying there, she does not, so the pleasure and length of time she is on the sofa outweighs the grief she gets.

i think you have it. it must be this.
its the kind of dog she is that is confusing me. very smart and easily trained. ive trained her to leave the cat food alone when im out and she wont touch it so im at a loss as to why we seem to fight over do not get up on the ruddy couch!
so yes, in her mind the shouting at she gets for it is obv worth a nice long lie on the settee when im not around.

bloomin hound :p.
will give the 'Culture Clash' a read. thanks guys.

No you're not alone. We paid good money for our sofas so don't want smelly dogs all over them! Also their hair gets everywhere as it is. They're not even allowed upstairs let alone on the beds.
However despite the fact that our two have NEVER been allowed on the sofas, occasionally I'll walk into the sitting room and there will be a very guilty looking English Setter curled up where we usually sit.

haha, oh yes! Mine slopes quitely away when she hears you coming downstairs and pretends she hasnt been there at all and honestly you'd never know if it wasnt for the warm patch, the scrunched up cushions and all the hair balls .

..Oh and the guilty face when confronted with the evidence!

No, he is not allowed under the duvet at ANY point, the blanket is for him to lie on so he is not in contact with my duvet.

The 'turn the heating on' comment was only supposed to be silliness in that he acts as a hot water bottle for me, not that I worry about him being cold

Mine is snuggled up next to me on the sofa as I type :) He sleeps on it all day when we're out, and spends most of his evenings cuddled up with us on there. He also sleeps on my bed, generally on my feet or pressed against my legs, but has been found under the duvet on really cold nights. If I'm poorly, he is permenantly pressed up against me, wherever I am. However, he never has muddy paws, has a bath at least once a week and doesn't shed hair, and is only a little terrierist so doesn't take up much space. If you tell him to get off, he gets straight off, he knows he's not allowed near us if we're eating our dinner on the sofa, and at night will go straight to his own bed if told to do so.

I like snuggling up to my little dog :) And he does look adorable...

no dog on the sofa or in our bed!!!! that is precisely why i never want a cat!! :p

betty has a bed in the kitchen and one in the sitting room, and if ever upstairs has a sheepskin rug that she is allowed to snooze on!

she's allowed on the bed once in a blue moon but only if the linen is light coloured (she is white) and is destined for the washing machine that day.

ive never been a fan of dogs on furniture. she's allowed on the beds and sofa at my mums... but she is spoilt rotten when she's at grannies!! :p

Dog is on the sofa right now - but she's a mini schnauzer so doesn't shed.

Cat sleeps in the bed and on the bed, he likes to press his cold paws against me sometimes.

I was brought up with animals sleeping in beds with us, so seems normal to me!

None of our dogs have ever been allowed on the furniture or even up stairs. However, my mum got a bit soft in the last few years and the dogs have been allowed upstairs and have a morning 'nap' on her bed. They don't go on the sofas though, Our old dog wouldn't even consider it anyway - he likes HIS bed, he doens't do human beds etc. The younger one won't get on a sofa but she has decided my mum's chaise in the front is perfectly sized for her small GSD x ody to splay out on and watch the world go by through the french windows! She's a swine!! She only does it in the day if noone's in - she sleeps in her bed on a night - out of choice.

No you're not the only one.My dog is not allowed on the sofa, was tempted when he was a pup and the kids asked but reason prevailed and as he will be a fairly big dog when grown decided it would be best to start as we mean to go on and say no!!

As for the bed, definitely not. He's not even allowed in my bedroom (does go in the kids rooms when they let him),I have pale and clean carpets and would like to keep it that way lol.

I don't always even let him upstairs TBH.I don't tell him 'no' as there are times I want him upstairs for baths and such like, and don't want to confuse him,but I have a stair gate I put up a lot of the time so he just can't go up there.
Partly I just like to keep certain areas 'dog free' due to hair, smell etc,but also Alfie can be a bit of a so and so for stealing items out of the laundry basket on the landing:rolleyes::p

Lol just noticed this.Mine also has never been allowed on the sofa, but once or twice he has randomly leapt up on it.
Only difference is being an Irish Setter he didn't have the brains to wait until I was out of the room:rolleyes::D

I adore my two dogs (a Springer and a JR), but they are not even allowed in the lounge or upstairs and certainly not on the sofa! My main reason is that they spend a lot of time outside with me and get absolutely filthy so they are better off staying in the (tiled) kitchen/dining room, which can be cleaned more easily. Its a large farmhouse kitchen and we spend lot of time in there so its not like they are on their own all the time. On very special occasions they are allowed into the lounge, but I normally end up regretting it as they don't settle and just start messing about and wreaking havoc!

I think its good for dogs to have boundries, or else they can get a bit confused about where they sit within the "pack" and my Springer already thinks he is top dog without being allowed on the sofa!!

Nope, you aren't the only one.
None of my dogs have ever been allowed upstairs at all, let alone on the beds. The floor is called 'the dog shelf' for a reason! ;)
To me (just my opinion!) for my dogs to climb up onto the sofa with me or to go upstairs without an invite would be showing bad manners - just the way I've been brought up.
However, when I am at anyone else's house, if their dog wants to sit on my knee, give me a cuddle or sleep in bed with me, fine not a problem :) :)

Mine have a dog chair and a dog sofa as well as their own beds. They also sleep on my bed or the spare bed:D

All the chairs and beds have throws on them so they don't come into contact with the furniture and will get off if told to do so:) and they certainly don't even try if they are in anyone elses house.

TBH I don't really care that much about it one way or another - I live on my own in a cottage in the middle of now where so like the security of my dogs being near by especially at night - and as someone else has said it can be bloody cold here in the winter so they double up as hot water bottles :D

Like so many things its a personal choice and not one that I can get worked up about :o there is more to be a good or bad dog owner and having a happy well behaved dog than whether it sleeps on your sofa/bed.

When I 1st got him, no he wasn't allowed on the sofa/bed/upstairs!! But he now has a blanket on the sofa and the bed. He knows if the blanket is not there, he is not allowed on! Simple.

He is really cuddly though! When he went for a holiday at my friends house for 2 weeks they don't let their dogs on the sofa. Within DAYS Harley was! I had to laugh when I got the email! Apparently his cuddles are just too good! ha ha!

When we go to some peoples houses he is obv not allowed on furnture, and one hliday let place we went to it was also not allowed. We told him no, there was no blanket there, and he got it. Not an issue at all :)

Mine can sleep where they want - sofa, bed, dog bed - as long as they move when I want to be where they are. We have blankets on the furniture and bed and leather furniture so nothing gets too furry. That said, we have dogs, there is fur, I've learned to live with it and not be that bothered about it. Life is too short :).

Mine are allowed to sleep/go wherever they want to go in the house. As long as they move when I ask them to there has never been a problem.I do have an old sofa that they mainly use,but they can go wherever.:D

absolutely, it is all about personal choice slinky. this subject was brought about in a light hearted way as i was genuinely interested in hearing other people's views, however no one has insinuated that anyone's choice about having your dog in bed/on the sofa with you makes you a good or bad dog owner or not

as you say, it is entirely unrelated.

My Apso goes on the couch and on the bed but only when I'm there as he just wants to be with me all the time! It doesn't bother me at all, he is small, very clean and doesn't shed. We love our cuddles together! My rough collie however doesn't get on the bed, she is a bit too big and smelly fir that! She is very happy downstairs though.

My JRT is ridiculously pampered - she has a blanket on the couch which she lies on (won't lie on there otherwise as the couch is leather and too cold for her!) and sleeps in bed under the duvet by my feet. Having said that we are quite house proud and keep her very clean so feet are wiped off before she comes in and she has a shower at the yard if she is muddy after a walk!

Hi, I'm new to HHO and have just been reading this thread.
We had dogs when I was younger (JRT to Rotties) and they were only allowed in the kitchen and only in to the sitting room in the winter and when we had a fire going.
After years of not having a dog (due to living in a town and having a small garden) I finally pursuaded my parents to let me have one. YAY! I bought a Yorkie.
At first we had an "only downstairs rule" which lasted about a year.
Now however, Yogi goes where I go. He sleeps in my bed on his own blanket, but he will get under the duvet in the early hours as he gets cold. He is allowed on the sofas, but only if invited and he knows that human meal times mean "bed" to him.
He is quite lavished with affection, but is treated like a dog.

I have two dogs one is a Japanese Akita and she lives outside we used to keep her in the house as a pup and then as she got older she got unsettled and didn't like being in the house as she just finds it too hot. So she lives outside now and we have a utility room which is her room its open all day so she can go in or out and then she is shut in there at night and she is more than happy. I'm not against her being in the house its purely that she doesn't like being in the house.

Our other dog is a little Papillon and she lives in the house at night and when we are out she sleeps in her crate in the kitchen. When we are at home she's allowed the run of the house downstairs and we let her on the sofa even though she has her own dog bed in the lounge! Spoilt puppy! lol We don't let her upstairs although occassionally she will venture up there and I would never let her in my bed. She does leave a trail of hair on the sofa but we vacuum regularly which is fine.

I just wouldn't be happy having her in my bed and don't see it as being very hygienic (can't spell!) as much as I love her unless she became very ill and had to be watched 24/7 thats the only circumstances in which she would be allowed to sleep in bed with us! lol I don't think my OH would be happy having her in the bed either as much as he loves the animals I think that would probably be the final straw! lol

See I never wanted rox on the sofa for those reasons my hubby let her and now I'm trying and failing (it is getting better) to teach her she's only allowed up on the sofa when invited.
As for beds she has never been allowed however she has always had her bed in our room successfully until she realised I'm a heavy sleeper and she can get away with jumping up on the bed! If I do wake up she's quickly told to go back to bed!

My dogs weren't allowd on the sofa or on the bed really before they never tried so I never invited although slept on my bedroom floor or daughters bed!!! But when my elderly dog who I lost not long after became ill they came on both and I cuddled all night!!! Even when I lost her the other one carried on, and now I've got a pup the sofa cuddling has carried on!!! The pup goes in a crate usually apart from when I've had some vino like tonight!!!! And there both under the duvet now !!!! But tommorow when I'm tired and grouchy there'll be back in the crate no problems.
