who doesn't insure their horse?
Thats right folks - she isn't insured for anything. She isn't freeze marked or micro chipped either but does have a very distictive scar on her hind leg.
I haven't got the extra money for insurance, so I don't do it. If the vet is needed for anything over £100 then my father has agreed he would cover it (lucky me?!) In the 10 years I've had her, I have been lucky, but would you say Iam mad too? And maybe too skint to have a horse if I can't afford insurance? Should it be a priority?

I personally have Bodey insured, but my Mum doesn’t have Badger insured. But that’s because my parent’s have the money, if god forbid anything happened, to pay for any treatment. If my Dad said he would cover it, I would do the same as you too. £30 a month adds up.

No.
Well, mine are insured for removal by the knackerman but that costs about €2 each horse per year.

They are chipped - but that is the law here and has been for a long time.

One will have to be insured with the Federation when we start competing.

None of mine are insured, but then it would cost me a small fortune to insure them all. I'd be better off putting some of the money in a bank account. But I don't do that either. Having said that, I'm a veterinary nurse so get any drugs at cost. I'd be fairly screwed if I had a major emergency, guess I'd get a bank loan or something. I do have 3rd party insurance as a gold member of the BHS, I consider that essential. If dad will pay, I don't see any need to worry.

I insure my two and mum has hers insured but i do know someone who doesn't insure as she has quite a few horses, it would cost too much too insure them all and she can afford any vets bills anyway.

I never insured.

The only 'insurance' I had was through the Pony Club...many many moons ago.
I used to put what I would spend on insurance in a bank account. Thankfully I never had to use it-but it was always there.

I didnt have my old horse insured because i could only get external insurance, and i have never called the vet for any external injury before.
I do have my new boy insured though, but thats because i couldnt afford the vet bills if anything bad happened, i.e MRI scan which is £1000on its own! x

What about public liability? If, through no fault of yours, your horse caused an accident / damage / injured someone? Would your father pay the law suit / damages / etc then? It could be tens of thousands! We now live in a 'sue em' society I have my horse insured for a lot less than it would cost me to replace 'like for like' (not that I ever could replace him) but at least we are covered for vet fees & public liability up to one million.

I don't have that either, I have nothing like I said and maybe its stupid but I guess I risk it. I can't afford it, so maybe I shouldn't have a horse?

Yes he would, money wouldn’t be an object. Plus Mum is a life time member of the BHS.

sorry may be a silly Q as mum deals with insurance etc... but if a horse is insured for say £1,500 does that mean vets fees and public liability is covered ?

im insured for a number of reasons - the horse was purchased for quite a bit of money (well mpre than any of my other nags were worth

) and he has an inate need to hurt himself of regular occasions (first 6 months of having him we had the vet up to a haematoma which refused to go,a nasty bout of tendonitis and a lung infection - to a total of nearly 5k worth of vets fees . I personally wouldn't be without it for my current horse but my previous horses have all been relatively trouble free so haven't insured them to such an extent. I would though regardless have liabilty as claims for this can run into the millions. Also my local vet practice will not do colic surgery unless the horse is insured - not sure if this is quite common or not

No none of mine are insured as my hubby doesn't beleive in it as we've seen on several posts and letters the insurance companies will try and get out off paying. So far we have managed to pay for any big bills for both horses and dogs. But if it came up to several thousands and they couldn't guarantee the horse still not right, we would pts, same with the dogs as we think only fair to the animals as we wouldn't want any of our animals in any pain, just because we couldn't bear to part with them. I'm in pain most days with my back right arm and neck, so I wouldn't inflict the same on my animals.

I don't insure my horses either, although I joined the BHS for the 3rd party insurance, I think it's really important to have that.
It's a risk but I'm willing to take it, over the years I've probably saved £1000s & have been lucky enough to have never needed it.
I keep £1000 in a saving account to cover any biggish bills that come in, anymore than that & I'd have to arrange a payment plan with my vet or get a loan.
