Only a little rant but feel free to add.....

I went to buy a *pink... PF be pround* Reflective jacket. Now I ride mainly young, and trouble horses and ponies. When breaking to roads I find drivers will slow down if i'm on a racehorse looking meanmachine, thinking of there cars.... But when i'm on something like a pony or even a calmer horse they think more, mher riding school, whiz past, my youngester doesn't know whats hit him and now galloping off in the distance or dancing for the cars in the road. So back to my rant... When i saw 'Young Horse, Catuion' I thought BRILLANT! Went to buy it told by the lovely tackshop lady, that it is very unlikely my insurance will cover me becasue i am saying that my horse is dangerous on the roads!! WHAT!!!

Second rant....

Rang up about a yard yesterday hoping to holiday there till mine is sorted. *also because it has a woodchip manage so wanted see what its like, might put one in on my yard* Any how seems nice about 15 horses, stables, manage, worming prog, all year 24/7 grazing etc but NOT ALLOWED ON THE YARD ALONE

Ok for me whos alway been by my self this is just unthinkable... Or is this the way these days? Only can think its for insurance spesh over the girl killed turning out....

I've heard about the young horse tabard and insurance companies before but really and truly do non horsey people who whizz past in cars really understand the 'young horse' warning??? Probably not, so just a 'slow down' tabbard would probably be just as effective (or not).
 
Same as Halfpass. I have heard that. It is like you are basically admitting you are a hazard.

Regarding the not being allowed to be on your own anymore. I understand why you are cross. I do my horses on my own all the time. However I do know of a lady who was killed by one of her horses.

I guess a Livery Yard can't risk it anymore.

Our employees are not allowed to work on their own with machinery.
 
Regarding the young horse tabard - ring your insurance company and ask them what their stance is on it. There have been a lot of rumours about this sort of thing and I have yet to find an insurance company that would back out on their obligations because you have a young horse tabard. At the end of the day all your saying is your horse is young - if your tabard said "dangerous in traffic" they may have a case!
 
yep heard about reflective gear with words on, any words aparently affect ur insurance polisy it is aparently just saying that you know you are riding a horse unsuitable for the roads. WHICH IS A LOAD OF B*****KS

as then there will be no horses on the roads as none of them can be trained as drivers are too thick to think *oh a horse, ithink i'll slow down." i had an old woman come within ten inches of my gees bum on a hack **AND SHE WAS IN HER MASSIVE YELLOW EXERSISE SHEET!!!** luckily my girl is increadible in traffic for a 5 year old and doesnt blink at a massive 18wheeler type going passed. (well done issy for training her so well or we could have been in big trouble!!)

and i have a similar thing. at our new yard, under 16s have to be with an adult, as insurance or the likes, so if i wanted to bike up there alone, i wouldnt be able to. thing, not meaning to sound big headed, but some people say i act much older than 14 and i often get mistaken for about 18 tehehehe

theres 1 16 year old at our old yard that i dont think she be alowed up there by herself as she isnt grown up enough to handle it. we had libs and her boy snoopy tied up and they kept going bum to bum, so as i was grooming and snoop was standing there, we moved him incase libs kicked as she was lookig very annoyed and kept twitching, and she isnt a kicker!! so in the girl comes and moves snoopy back to being bum to bum with mine!! DOES SHE WANT HER HORSE TO BE KICKED? and issy, you act much older that your age and probably know more about horses than many adult horsepeople!!

I heard that. I do remember someone saying they had success by drawing an L plate on the back of a yellow tabard, why that isn't covered by the same school of thought is anyones guess.* Rolls eyes*

I love 'Wide and Slow' tabards, usually worn by a fat bum on a big cob. Apologies to all of the above...

There is strictly liability with horses - therefore you are liable whatever your horse does, and whatever you are wearing. You have insurance exactly for this reason - to pay out when you are liable for something.


Realistically your insurance company would just pay out for 99.9% of accidents and accept the (strict) liability without query. IF however, the driver in question had acted so badly on the road so as to constitute a criminal offence then I suppose you may attempt to reduce the compensation, wholly or in part, due to their own contributory negligence.


Having discussed the matter with a tort expert recently I asked him about the "young horse" tabards and his opinion was that they could only ever work in your favour, not be used against you, as you cannot be any more liable than you are for strict liability and so they can only be construed as you taking as much care as possible to prevent an accident.


I personally wear a "please pass wide and slow" one, so that those ignorant divs who wizz past you, no longer have "oooh, I didn't know you should slow down for horses" as an excuse.
