I've been worrying for a while..Just measured myself and am approx 175cm (so translated to 5 foot 9? I always thought I was 5 foot 7 :S) and weigh about 11 stone (and losing!).

I'm starting to worry my height will affect my horse..She's a 14.3ish welsh section D, and carries herself very big. I bought her initually to sell her on, 18 months ago, but I love her soooo much and just can't do it, but I'm starting to worry its cruel riding her? I know I look tall on her, but when does tall get too tall?
These pics are from yesterday

I love her sooo much but would hate to cause any discomfort to her..

Weight wise she can easily carry you, WC's are very strong!

I wouldnt say you look overly big on her, certainly dont sell her just because you feel you are too tall for her, you look fine together!

My 6ft 4 OH used to ride my 14.2hh WC, that is when you need to worry about being too big lol!

You're 5ft9 and 11stone, she is 14.3hh...I'd say that was fine!I wouldn't worry either, you don't look too big on her!

I'm 5ft4 and 9 stone, my pony is 13.3hh....I worry sometimes that I'm too big for him but my boss/yard owner says I'm fine!

This is us:

She'll be fine!! My 15hh arab could carry more than that and your mare has far more bone than he ever will...
Just enjoy her!

Thanks guys! It didn't help my instructor was making suggestive noises about me being big/heavy on her (and my other, the other one is a 15.1hh tb x connie)

I don't care if I look stupid, but she can be very difficult sometimes and started/ing to get paranoid if it could be because of my height.

Welsh cobs are designed to carry far more weight than you. They were breed for shepparding on the hills and mountains so I wouldn't be to concerned. I think everybody is far too concerned about thing like this, they seem to forget what our natives were breed to do.

You look fine on her!!

Friend of mine has a WC & he easily carries her. Her hubby rides him sometimes & he's 15 stone. He carries him no problems.

Don't part with her just because you feel you look leggy on her, she looks gorgeous

No you look great on her. Also you seem to have a really good position and that helps more than any weight as even the lightest smallest person can do harm to their back if they have a bad position. She's a very noce looking mare by the way. Ignore your instructor on this point, she's wrong.

No, never no way are you too big for her.

This is too big (but not too heavy)
Long story, but I ended up having to ride my daughters pony home from our hack yesterday. She's a tank like 13.1, I'm 5'6 with longish legs...

I get really frustrated by these 'too big/heavy' posts. People dont realise that the normans used to ride 11.2 + hh ponies into war with full armoured gear!!!!!!! They didnt worry then did they! Horse/ponies carry alot more weight than given credit to!! Obviously I wouldnt expect a 6ft person to ride a shetland but you get what I mean!! My 13.2hh new forest will carry 14 stone easy!!!!

i'd like to see a pic of you on her with your feet out of the stirrups. tbh, if your feet reach her knees, then you're too tall for her (not necessarily too heavy, i know Welsh Ds are strong!). if you're going to be jumping, it will potentially wreck your jumping position, because unless you ride VERY short, you'll have to swing your lower legs out of the way to clear the poles.
how do i know this? because i had a 14.2 for one year when i was 13, and i shot up to 5'10" in about 3 months, and yes, riding him wrecked my jumping position for years...
but if you love her, and you don't have huge ambitions to event/jump huge fences etc, then you'll be okay.
sorry to be so honest, but i thought that's what you wanted!

No your not at all, I'm pretty sure she will be able to take up to at least 14 stone. I worry about being too big on my lightweight trakehner x, but the vet said she can carry up to 10st, so I may be tall on her, but not too heavy, which is the same as you, plus you don't look that tall on her, she is very pretty

I'm 5'9" too (but half a stone heavier than you) and I ride a 14.1 Arab and if I'm not too big/heavy for her then your fine on yours!

Do you jump with your arab? i'm curious as a 5'9" lady I was looking at loaning a 14.2 hairy cob from my yard and was worried about jumping on him.

No worries about being honest, why bother ask if I'd like you all to tell me what I want to hear?

I can only find one picture of me riding her without stirrups, which is bareback. Mind you this is back from when I got her summer 2006, BUT in all honesty I don't think I've grown much.[I bought her intending to sell her on, or I'd never have gotten something so small]

But in all honesty - we do have quite big ambitions to jump fairly substansal fences - she has a pretty massive jump on her, loose jumped herself (not intentionally obviously!) out of the pen in which those top photos of us were taken in, I've had her over a 4 foot single fence and 3 foot 6 courses..I know problems with striding Re. BSJA ect will pose problems of a different nature but we're still a long way off that but..

I don't want to hold her back but then she won't care if she doesn't jump huge, if she can't manage distances I'll be content to stay unaff I think. Used to be really competitive but I've had to acknowledge if I want to keep her I might have to give up dreams of 1.20m+ for the moment anyway lol so we'll see.

Thanks, I'll have to keep an eye on what my lower leg does me thinks.

I think you look OK, but I would think about what kerilli said.

Look at the height of the mounted games kids! - They're huge and still ride 13.2hh's!! (but they're not jumping)

I don't show at the mo but I do jump logs and things which we come across in our path when out on our long hacks. We gallop when out too and I don't feel unbalanced in forward seat either.

hmm, i think if you got someone to take a pic of you sitting up (not relaxing in chair position!) with legs hanging down straighter, your feet would be close to her knees...
it's a tough one. i'm the same height as you, give or take 1/2 an inch, with 29" inside leg (this makes a difference, some people have a long back and shortish legs, but if your legs are long, it matters), and i feel daft and disorganised on anything below 16hh. i fit 16.2-17h (or more!) the best, and look best on them. there's loads of room for my legs then.
pics in my siggie - size of horses 18h, 18h, 16.3, 16h, 15.2.
see what i mean?!
if she's a really lovely horse, i firmly believe that you can do your homework and find her a really good home, and she'll make her own luck.
but if you love her to bits, and are honestly happy to put that above your own ambition, then great.
