Ever the one to find something to worry about, I'm worried little ned isn't/hasn't grown big enough for me. I'm not heavy (ish) but I have along legs.

I've always preferred ponies and little horses, but I also want to win at showjumping, when we will be up against big 'osses.

SO, am I ok on him, and if so, can little ones stand their own against the 16.3+'s? (You may be negative, I can just sell him in a years time to a PC home)

How big is he? How old?

You look alright to me

I haven't had a measuring stick to him, but rough estimate with weigh tape is 16hh. He was 4 this spring.

Just concerned as today I was riding round with the BSJA liveries on their 17hh warmbloods.

Ooh you'll be fine! Have you seen even the little 14.2hhers ping

My horse used to event and he's 16hh

If thats of any reassurance! My friend has a 17.2hh who she had to retire from affiliated jumping because he just couldn't get his legs together enough haha

Aw hun. Pah to 17hh Warmbloods

. I have one, well, she's due to make 17-ish, but I'd have happily gone into the BSJA classes on my 15.2hh spotty bot mare - she'd have given them all a run for their money

.

I am always paranoid about looking big on my 15.3hh TB girlie as I'm quite tall too. You look great hun.

I always think of William Fox Pitt..he never shys away from the smaller ones even though he's 'leggy'!xxx

of course little ones can hold their own, my friend had a fab 16.1 mare, unbeatable in a jump off.

don't forget when he gets to that point you will be able to cut corners a damn site easier!

Looks fine to me, and size isn't everything: at the local village show my daughter came second (losing by just 3 seconds, but was at least 20 seconds faster than everyone else) in the horse & hound to a lady on a horse which was about 16.2-17hh. Daughter is 10 with long legs, pony is 11.2 and being used to schooling in a small bit of field is used to cutting corners.

You look totally fine on him - exactly right I'd say. I think someone else has said but I've accompanied my friend's daughter to a lot of BSJA shows and I would say the little ones, ridden well, def can knock the spot off the biggies. Specially in the smaller arenas..

You look fine, i also thought it was going to be a pony, Im 5'8 and BE Event and SJ my 14.2, i feel little amoung the big ones!

Too big, not at all, what I did see in your photos is that I think your riding short to look smaller, but this is making you lean forward and be pushed to the back of the saddle.

So I'd suggest lengthening oyour stirrups and go and enjoy your horse. If someone says your too big...ignore them.

your'e not too big at all!! and small horses and ponies have advantage in the jump off - they turn on a sixpence!!

What a nice looking horse, plenty big enough, and no way are you too big ,heavy, whatever.Anyway its not how big a horse is but how big his"heart"is.

16 hh is a "little 'un" these days??!

You're fine! Lovely "pony"!

joseyjo88, you sound like you need to join our "Adults who ride Ponies" Clique!

My mums 'Warmblood' grew 3 inches between the ages of 4 and 7 yrs of age. He's now 14yrs old and 17hh with no withers.
You look great, and when he's finished growing and filled out i'm sure you'll think he's perfect (you should already, he looks lovely).
Plus these 17hh plus horses are harder to hold together

being perfectly honest right this minute you look a little tall on him. BUT I do on my 4 year old right now. However in 2 years time neither of us will. When they get top line and fill out we will both look perfect. For now we both need to be careful with our upper bodies that we don't over balance them.
the only thing I will say is your saddle is either not big enough or you need to sit further forward in it. Its not that you have a big bum its that your long legs push you to the back of it. You should be able to hand a hands width behind you on the saddle or you will sit too far back, especially when jumping and push the back down digging it into him

Thanks everyone. I just feel like I'm too 'over his neck'. My friend has one a similar height, and when they're riding his head is much higher, I feel like I'm towering over him!

KS1 - I know about my stirrups, I had to shorten them as he decided one day that bucking was fun and exciting, plus my last 'horse' was 14.2, so I'm just used to riding short!

These big moving 17hh things make me feel like I should grow up and get a 'proper' horse! Especially when said 17hh comes hurtling round the school making 12hh pony and kid jump out the way as owner says "keep out the way, she's very high strung...."

Thanks though

That's really helpful, thanks! I'm hoping to get a decent VSD saddle soon that should help with my posture as thats a very flat jumping saddle (and I'm rubbish).

Longer stirrups, bum forward
