Hey, I have my cob for over a year now, he is six this year. A few people on the yard I keep him at has mentioned that I am getting too tall for him. He is 14hh, and isn't really that chunky. I am what you may call a 'bigger' rider, I am about 5"3'/5"4', and I weigh 10 stone. Do you think I am too big/heavy for my cob?

The top picture is the most recent one, the others were taken earlier this year/last year.)
 
I wouldn't say you're too heavy for him, he just doesn't take up your leg very well, in the top picture you legs look quite long on him, maybe if he fills out abit more he might take your leg better...
 
When you say 'getting too big' does that mean you are still growing? If so then you may well outgrow him at some stage. If he really is 14hh and you are only 5'4 then I'm surprised actually how long your leg looks on him in the top photos (but it could the angle). However, I don't think you are too big or too heavy so I wouldn't worry. If you feel happy and balanced when you ride him just ignore everyone and have fun with him. I like your pony a lot, quite a smart little chap :)

PS, this is bugging me: There is something about the pics showing your stirrup leathers that looks odd to me - like they are twisted the wrong way? Probably just an optical illusion thingy and me being weird :D

yeah,they look odd to me too....the elastic safety strap on the stirrup should face towards the front of the horse before you mount...did I explain that right?? does that make sense??

I suppose my legs are a bit long on him' xD I actually don't know how tall I am, 5"4' is just an estimate which my parents said, I could be taller, I don't know' xD

@Angelbones I think it might be my feet turned out. It's something they made us do at the riding school I learned at before I got Danny, I'm trying to get out of that habit, but it's easier said than done' xD
 
Nice pony :) You are tall on him but I expect he will fill out a bit :)

The stirrups are on the leathers the wrong way round though so the leathers are twisted the wrong way!
 
You aren't too big for him at the moment, although perhaps you are a little large for your saddle..... you look to be sitting on the cantle, especially in the last picture.

But your stirrups are definitely wrong. Pop your saddle on the pony, let your stirrups down and let them hang. The elastic loop on the safety stirrup should be to the front. When you get on the stirrup leather should twist so that it follows your leg and the elastic is on the outside of your foot (by your little toe). I suspect that you need to swap your irons over so your left iron is on the right and the right on the left.

Haha, I thought there was something wrong with the stirrups' xD I'm planning on getting new stirrups though, as one of the safety elastics came off when I was jumping him and I can't find them anywhere. So right now, I have a bit of bailing twine and a bobble tied on to the edge' XD
 
Are you too big for the pony? No. Are you too big for your stirrups? Yes ;) Technically you're not meant to use peacocks if you're over 7 or 8 stone, as apparently they can bend. If you're getting new ones you might want to take that into consideration. Some people still prefer to use them as safety stirrups anyway, but it's worth being aware of the possibility they may bend though ;)
 
Yes definitely too big - I think you should give him to me :) Not really but think you must be taller than 5'4"
 
Really? I never knew that' xD I'm thinking of getting D-ring stirrups, something along that line, as I don't want to get the same ones I got right now as the elastic came off, and like you said, they'd bend' :L
 
Since when has 10 stone and 5ft4 ish been a 'bigger' rider - you look just fine too me! I bet there are many on the forum that would like to be just 10st!

For a native type I was always told they could take a stone per hand, so no way are you too heavy for him. At 6 he may well fill out more so will take up your leg a bit more.

I excercise my sons welsh pony - he is 13.2hh and I have the same stats as you.

No you look fine but I think if you get any bigger or taller you might find your feet too far below his sides. He can carry you.

I am 12 stone and ride in those peacock type safety stirrups but have a bigger pair than yours look and used them for years with no bending etc..I always keep some elastics and they generally last for weeks and weeks. Have served me well when I have fallen off.

Good luck and if you get fed up with your pony send him to me as I would like to squash him.

You might need a bigger saddle? but dont waste any money yet if you are quite happy together etc. Nice horse.
 
I hate this passion for great big horses! He looks lovely and just fine for you. I'm taller than you and my Andy is only 15.1 and can fly over 1m.30 despite me being 'too big for him'

Haha yeah, small horses are awesome' :3 I think some people forget how tough the little guys are' xD
 
No, not too big. But if your still growing you may end up too tall to be comfortable. In all honesty its harder to improve your riding on a horse you're too tall for, but thats no-ones business than yours.
 
Your stirrups are the wrong way round in the earlier photos. What guidance do you have to allow this to go on for a long time.

You can buy replacement rubbers and leather tags for peacock stirrups so save the money and instead of new stirrups purchase a book on tack, have a lesson or join the Pony Club.

You are not too big but I don't think the saddle fits you.

agree^^ I think you look lovely together, agree also that saddle wont be helping you much IMO. If people are making 'comments' just remember that people will ALWAYS make comments...if you bought a 16hh horse someone would say you are 'overhorsed'! Just enjoy him.
 
please , dont listen to anyone, I did as well,everyone kept telling me i was too tall for my arab, and I did listen and became very self conscious, now in hindsight, I wish I had ignored them and carried on, instead , I left him as a grass mower for about three years, until I realised the protential he had.. dont listen and enjoy your lovely pony.
 
I'm 5ft 8 and 9st and am backing a 13.2 New Forest. I do have a larger saddle than yours and find it helps a lot :D

I had it fitted as wanted something that fitted pony and myself so we were balanced if that makes sense.

He looks a smart chap not very cobby to me but VERY smart :D What breed is he ? Enjoy him :D

Danny is a Welsh section D, he was born on the mountains as a wild horse' (: (I swear sometimes he still thinks he is wild!)
Oh, and I am 16 this year, do you think I will grow much more? My family says I won't, but I'm not too sure' xD
