hey!

complete newbie so hi all ?

just wondering your thoughts on whether I’m small enough to jump on my daughters dartmoor.. for context the pony is 13hh and a ‘leg in each corner’ short backed type. Never been on the weigh bridge but I’d guess around 300kg mark as shes definitely the larger side of the dartmoor scale.

I’m 5’2 and 113lb (I’m normally less but lockdown and Ben and Jerry’s is a bad bad combination ?) I know theoretically this is under the 20% rule but I hate the thought of causing any problems!

the photo is too large to load so I’ve attached a link

although I’d only really be looking to hack, school only if there’s any problems with the pony being fizzy for my daughter.

also I’d love to hear any experiences from any dartmoor owners or lovers! As previously I’ve only been party to nutty chestnut welsh mares!

thank you

you look perfect!

thank you! I just find on a livery yard you always fear being judged! I’m mid way through parting with my chestnut welsh D mare who proved too much.. so I don’t fancy getting another just yet!

but I don’t want to feel like I shouldn’t get on my daughters pony and be judged. Horse world for you haha!

this is perhaps a better photo as it’s from the front. She’s a lovely mare! Much softer than my welsh! Photo

You absolutely great together ?
I’m 5ft6, 124lbs and I ride a 13hh. The judgey-mcjudgepants seem to pop up everywhere, but hey ho.

Size wise you look absolutely fine to me - but does the pony always carry his head like that for any length of time? Head up, ears back, wary eye indicates some degree of discomfort to me (not necessarily related to you!) but if it is only a transient movement, please ignore this comment.

I find this is every horse's normal response to "smile! xyz is taking a photo of us!"

You're fine, I would say saddle might be an issue though, if that's on the back rib at the back then it's too long as it's actually up over the shoulder, either way you need a saddle that stays back behind the shoulder. This is often the deal breaker with adult riders on some short backs.
