Was just telling my friend about the horse I usually ride at my riding stables, he's around 13.2hh, and I'm about 5 ft 4. No idea if he's part native, but he's middle weight, like me :D. But when I was telling her about him she asked his height so I replied around 13.2hh, and she says "Oh, not very big then.. You must swamp him!" I never really feel too big, and he certainly can easily take me as we often jump and he can tank off occasionally, I thought 13.2hh was about right for me at the moment.. or am I being naive? Sorry, pointless post, but I was thrown off a little! :p Cookies if you read this far through my rambling :) xx

Nah you aren’t too big, I bet even though he is only 13’2hh, he has a nice big barrel to get your legs around doesn’t he?
I’m 5ft7 and ride Badger who is 14’2hh and feel, and look absolutely fine on him, he is a 16hh hand horse (in a 6ft3 rug) on short legs anyway.

Oh no defo not too big! i mean bigger people have to ride small horses sometimes i mean what do you expect a 6 yr old to break them in? my friends mum is 5ft4 and rides her lightweight 13hh/13.1hh and he is still very capable of galloping off in front when in comes to a race!

My daughter is 10, 5ft 2 with long legs and rides a skinny 13.2 or a chunky 14.1, and looks fine for now on the smaller one but plenty of room for growth on the bigger one, unless you have them side by side you'd think he was a lot taller if you look at her legs. So if he's chunky and 13.2 that's a lot of leg that can be hidden, so I can't see the problem

Yay! She was utterly shocked that I rode 'something so small' ;) when I thought he was about the right height for me! :p Thankies, just needed a second opinion on this, purely to reassure me and prove I'm not a pony squisher :D xx

Woah! Sounds like a horse you've shrunk in the washing machine :D Is he the Fjord looking one in your siggy? xx

If you're comfortable and he's comfortable then there's no problem.

I'm 6'1" and I ride a 14.2 NF (who thinks he's 16.2 :D), and he can clear a 3ft jump easily with me, well, easy for him, I have my eyes closed.

So I expect she wouldn't approve of me & my girl then!!

Shes 13.1h on her tiptoes!! I'm 5ft7 and 9st4lbs

I'm 5'8" tall and no skinny minnie. My chappie is 13.2hh and...wait for it...I backed him about 3 weeks ago and we are now starting hacking etc. He's a Fell so has the big body on little legs thing going on like Badger the Fjord!

Here's us, second time I sat on him:

Ohh wow, well done!! He's adorable, you look great on him :) Never would have guessed you're 5'8", lucky you you're so tall! :p xx

Thanks, he's a sweetie (most of the time!). He's really wide so takes up the leg. Got back from my hack on friday and was aching down the insides of my thighs as I've not ridden properly since Christmas and he's soooo wide!

No your not too big in my opinion. Shame some people think that everyone else must ride a horse like them! Some of us happily ride ponies, I am an adult pony rider, other people can bog off! She copes with me just fine :D

So true! She asked me whether I had any intention of moving onto horses like I should be! If only she could see me and the ponio tearing round a course of jumps, he thinks he's 18hh!! :D I'm crossing my fingers I won't grow much more, I do enjoy riding the littlies! :) xx

Just ambled in for the cookies :D

I have some hot choccy if you'd like? :)

I'm five eight, weigh more than I wish I did, and ride Little Cob who is 13.3hh. Vet and physio both laughed when I asked if I was too heavy for him :)

If that's you in your siggy, I think you look great! :p haha, enjoy your cookies, I'll take some of that hot choccie thanks :D You lot are so tall, I'm a little jealous! :) xx

I used to wish I was taller - am 5ft2in short - now I embrace it because I can still ride ponies!!! If you can get away with riding ponies do it, so much more fun than riding a horse:D

Am I right in thinking you are quite young?

I reached my adult height of 5'4'' at around the age of fourteen. At the time I was riding a 13hh pony and was perfectly comfortable on her. As I got older I didn't get any taller but I gradually rode bigger and bigger horses, until I bought my 16.2hh mare at 19.

I certainly wouldn't say you are too big for a 13.2hh but you might be at a stage soon where you'd like to move on to something taller - especially if you are jumping as its much easier to keep your balance on something a bit bigger. The other thing to bear in mind is that if you end up too big for this pony's saddle it will have a negative impact on your position.

If, however, you are perfectly happy on your pony, then there is no reason not to keep on enjoying him/her, as you definitely aren't too big!

Yes, pretty young, turning 14 in May :) And I've always found the opposite, I've found jumping on ponies easier! :) xx

i sometimes ride a fat arsed 12.2hh pony who can take me perfectly fine, we love to canter round and he will happily jump if i asked him to :D im only 5ft 4 so im only lil too lol x
