Am I too much of a chunky monkey ?

I think you are a couple of stone too heavy for that particular horse but I don't think you need to lose 6 stone in order to be able to ride.

This.

He would probably be happier with 14stone or so and under on him. ofc impossible to judge without knowing the horse, but as a generlisation :)

The losing 6 stone comment is utterly ridiculous!

Thanks, so suggestions of a suitable alternative ? I have in my mind a plodder happy to hack out a couple of times a week. Nothing to energetic.

Thanks

Just something a bit larger :) a more substantial stamp of a horse ;)

One of the old fashioned Irish draught types or a nice strong hunter type (although maybe a tad on the energetic side)

Some cracking cydie crosses too.

:)

Ooh a clyde cross. Think 'hovis' but more chilled out. I agree a 14.2 would probably be happier with 14 stone than 16 but why not ask the horse's vet or physio, they've seen him and you, we haven't.

My daughter has a 14.2 Welsh Sec D gelding.

He's a chunky lad (he was a tiny bit underweight when we got him, but not now) , what I want to know is would it be cruel to put my 5'10 16 stone on him ? If so , what would be an acceptable weight ?

Thanks

how much work would you be doing ??
my dad (6ft2 and 90kg)got on my 4year old, narrow, 14.3hh standardbred and had quick walk, trot ,canter on him and he was fine  but it was only for 1 minute...
no back problems or unwillingness to go foward ......... my dad was in the army and on a mounted division and they were riding 14-15hh ponys the armys wieght rule was 20% of the horse wieght and this was carrying them all day though rough terrain ....so if you say wanted to have a quick walk around the block my betis that you would be fine :eek:

My Rocky Mountain mare is only 14.1 and certainly not as strong as a cob and she carries me without any issue and I am 6'1" and around 13st. I would say that it is all incentive I will ever need to keep my self as light as I can.

I agree with the 14stone.

I put my OH on my boy for a swift walk around one day. My boy is a welsh c x coloured cob, he has 8.5" of bone so not overly chunky but very wide. Oh varies between 12 and 13 stone. I could see my boy wasn't particularly 'happy' as such as he looked like he was really carrying the weight- either that or he was just shocked as used to carrying my 8stone! Didn't harm him that much as he was walking around and then spooked at something and took of at full speed! :D needless to say, OH hasn't been on him since :o
