Am I too old to work with horses again , what do you think , im 44 in may and work in care have a qualification, and plan to do more but would love to work with horses again but feel im too old what do you think ???? please dont be polite just honest x

I don't think you are too old per se. It'll be damn hard work, you might experience some prejudice and find it hard to get a job?

The biggest question though would be getting a job that pays well enough for you to live. That's assuming that you have financial commitments.

I would say it depends on how fit and confident you are there are plenty of older folks working with horses and your experience will outweigh younger less experienced staff ,without knowing what you have done in the past it is difficult to say any more ,good luck .

Personally i would hire someone of 44 before i hired an 18 year old. FWIW i dont even think 44 is old! There are 3 ladies who do services at my yard and most people choose the lady who is 52 - she is so considerate and takes alot of time and effort over everything whereas the younger girls do what they have to in order to ride and then fit in child care/ social lives etc. Im sure that doesnt apply to everyone but in my experience older = more life experience. Go for it i would say your at an advantage not a disadvantage.

if you are too old god help the lot of us!!!! my best employee is my handy man he is 62! just gets on with the job, nothing is too much trouble! doesnt clock watch and isnt glued to his phone! only downside is he is fairly deaf so you have to shout! but keeps on working and lovely with the animals! in this day an older employee is a far better bet... doesnt phone in with hang overs, has probably bred so wont claim maternity (thats why i prefer male employees) has a sense of responsibilityetc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree with Cample19 entirely. I look after horses on my yard and am in my mid 40's, given me a new lease of life, since getting back into horses at 40 Ive lost 3stone and never felt better. Looking back at some video footage of me in my 30's recently its like looking at an old woman!! I find I have more patience and am thorough about what I do. Go for it!!

For What Its Worth.

I think if you want to work with horses and are prepared to accept the pay and conditions then go for it.

I would not say 44 is too old to start anything new personally, maybe being a top sports person would not work starting age 44, but I think life is too short to never know

You can give it a go and see how you feel

i would much rather employ somone you age or older, you have maturity and experiance on your side and i think that someone your age would be more committed and take the job more seriously, and be in it for the long run than someone who is 18

Pack it in!!!! I've just turned 46 and only just got my first horse.

Your fitness is what counts more than your numerical age.

If you can afford it go for it! I'd love to have a job working with horses - but if I did that I wouldn't be able to afford to have one.

well peeps. I'm in my 50's and I work at a well known stud in my area. I'm as fit as a butchers dog and have far more patients and compassion for the horses than the youngsters who work there do! Old? No way, I love it and am glad that I no longer work with a load of backstabbing upstarts in corporate business. One thing though, the pay is rubbish!!

Your still a spring chicken!!!!!

I am in my first year of vet med at uni and one of my friends, also in her first year, is 52. She has more energy and enthusiasm than many girls young enough to be her grand-daughter and will make a fantastic vet.

I think the only hinderance is salery. But if you look, you can maybe find something workable, even if you worked part time in a better paying job to make ends meet, and part time with horses.

You're never too old to do anything! You only live once (as far as we know!!) so do anything and everything you want to do!!

I am just 40 and started working with horses again this winter. It nearly killed me to start with but I stuck it out and now have muscles and stamina to die for!
(I realise, though that I am a mere child compared to you)

Who ever told you 44 was old what rubbish. I only started working with horses when I was 61 and we got our first stallion. My only regret is that I did not do it earlier - I love being with the horses although to date not started to ride- maybe thats next. The stallion has taught me so much(about people as well) and is now my best mate. I can tell you I was pretty unsure when first faced with 16.3hh of muscle and snorting beast but what a kitten he is. I supose it helped having handled my sons 3 day eventers. Go for it and enjoy

Couldn't agree more (particularly as my 18 year old working student just packed it in the other day without even bothering to tell me he wasn't coming back after Christmas!) I also employ a late 40's grandmother - and she is VERY reliable and capable! Worth 10 of him!

And I've just turned 60 - and work a 7 day week. The only thing I draw a line at is being first on the visiting breakers (although I'm happy to be first on my home bred youngsters!)

A decentyard should pay at least a little over NMW - so if you can affort it, go for it!
