Am i too old to start having riding lessons?

I haven't been riding for about 10 years (i'm 24 now) as the local riding school closed down and there wasn't another one close enough for us to go.

I have been desperatley wanting to have lessons again but i was too overweight.

I have now lost the weight and i'm in a position where i can start going to lessons again but i feel like i'm too old and will probably be the oldest one there (I don't remember many adults at the old riding school) Think i'd look pretty stupid riding with a group of 10 year olds :S

Good lord no!! I was doing XC training last week with a lady who started riding aged 47 and she is now 54!! She was jumping bigger than me and I've been riding for 35 years!!!:eek:
 
Yes most definitely- obviously no one rides over the age of 24....... :)

Of course not!! My old dear decided she was gfoing to start riding at the age of 50+ ok so she got to the stage where she could walk, trot and canter and then gave up but hey she tried
 
Absolutely not Tinkerella! Go for it!

Am wondering if your old riding school that closed down may have been one that particularly specialised in kids (some of them do!) which might explain why you've got the impression that there won't be many adults. All you need to do if you feel uncomfortable, is look at a few riding schools, see which one suits you/you like the feel of best - and then I guarantee that you won't be the oldest person having lessons (more likely you'll be one of the youngest!).
 
You are absolutely not too old to start lessons, crikey, at 24 you are a mere baby. Loads of adults start their riding careers much, much older than you.

Well done losing all the weight, now do what inspired you to lose it! Find a good school with a nice instructor and go for it.

Another 'no, you're not too old by about 40 odd years' :D
My Mum went back to riding when she was 44 and carried on until nearly 80...
 
Well first of all a big well done to you for losing the weight and being determined to do this so you can ride again. I know that 24 seems quite old but once you visit a yard again you'll see that there are all shapes and sizes, ages and abilities. I've competed in a local show jumping competition against a husband and wife who took up riding in their 50's and I have lots of friends who are youngsters too. I'm certainly the oldest in my group of riders who are mainly teenagers (I'm 43). One thing I like about this is that all the other mothers sit and watch their children ride, whilst I inspire mine. Take the leap and you'll not look back.
 
Yep faaaaaaaarrrrr too old.

Sorry but you shoulda been out hunting as a 3yo and at 24yo should at least have a string of hunters/eventers/wormbloods (for dressage of course)... what were you thinking????

No way!! if you are too old then there is no hope for me!! I have lessons on my mare and I recently went to a nearby school to ride a schoolmaster - you are def not too old!! A lady on my yard got into riding in her 60s - if she wasn't too old (and she wasn't!!) then you certainly aren't!
Get yourself out there and enjoy your riding, never mind what anyone else might think!

Someone on here has a fab quote in the signature - those that mind don't matter and those that matter don't mind - says it all really!
 
Too Old at 24! Good god, please. I stopped riding 11 years ago to have kids - I am now 43 - some days I think I am bloody ancient and other days not so ancient but at 24 I certainly never ever thought I was too old for anything!

Get back on those horses and have fun!

There are loads of riding schools out there that teach older people. I found a fantastic riding school near to me in Bucks that was sort of affiliated to a local RC and they use to have group lessons and the ocassional competition - really great for getting back into it.

I knew a man in his late 70's who learnt to ride.His daughter thought it would be good for him. Needed 3 people to help him mount then he was away. RI didn't let him tootle round either, he had to ride like everyone else.

Some RS cater mostly for children but lots don't. Find a nice place and have fun. You have plenty of time to achieve whatever you want in riding, its a sport in which those at the top are often in their 40's +
 
Never, ever feel to old (except when trying to dismount) I wasted 30 years don't you waste another day. I gave up at 18 having ridden all my life & restarted at 48 after a ride on a friends pony. Bought myself a pony by the name of Polly & have never looked back.

Too old at 24? :eek: Age is a state of mind. I have my own horse but recently started going for some lessons, my age never even crossed my mind, I am 47.

You're a spring chicken:) book some lessons and enjoy yourself lots:)

FFS :eek: - I am 49 and started riding 6 years ago having never sat on a horse before in my life, for that matter, not even a donkey at Blackpool, I now hunt, SJ, Dr, CT and XC so NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO at 24 you are not too old! :confused:

No, get a lesson booked and get on a horse!! The riding school I used to go to taught riders from 5 to 85. Well done for losing the weight :)
