Winter is near enough here yet I've just accepted an interview for grooms work. So I don't even get the fun times first, straight into cold, dark, wet weather.
My parents are set against me doing yard work, think it's a pointless thing to do.
But I've been fussy, it's not just grooms work but very much a training based position with good riding opportunities with a lovely sounding dressage lady who also buys horses in from Holland, schools them and sells them on, which if I'm going to be working hands on with horses is very much what I'd want to do.

I'm going to have a brush up lesson with my instructor on turnout and handling etc so hopefully I won't make any faux-pas'!
I'm already nervous though as I've always really ridden problem/un-schooled horses so bit worried I'll get on and press the wrong buttons so to speak and it'll be a disaster!

Re-assurance and advice on what to wear would be good please! (I'll be spending the day down there this weekend and riding. I have brown leather boots & gaiters, taupe breeches, but do I wear a shirt, or polo t-shirt or what on top?)

Cheers.

I'd say dress smartly but don't forget about practically either - so a shirt with maybe a gilet on over the top? with your breeches, and then have your boots when you need to ride but not for working around the yard. you don't want to be worried about your boots when dealing with something thats going to jump on your toes!
whatever you dress in make sure you feel comfortable in it so you can concentrate on the getting the job done

good luck

i worked at a yard for over 4yrs but this also involved a lot of teaching lessons. i was very low paid started at £50 p/w as was supposed to be getting lessons and going through training etc this never happened i earned max of £160 p/w all the time i worked their and recieved hardly any of the training and lessons i ended up leaving as i resented the treatment i got( lots of little reasons). However i certainly dont regret doing it i did enjoy it, the work kept me fit and i gained lots of experience in breaking and schooling horses and just generally dealing with a variety of very different horses. I agree with peacelilly on what to wear smart but practical. i think if its smething you want to do then go for it!

You'll be absolutely fine and I for one am jealous. Fancy having lots of nice horses to ride and play with all day! I'm sure smart and practical will be just the ticket. Have fun at the weekend and don't forget to let us know.

It sounds like you have thought carefully about the kind of yard work you want to do and you have found the ideal job - you sound horribly sensible to me!
