I've been looking for a companion pony for my mare, and today I went to world horse welfare as they rang to tell me they had a few horses that met my criteria.
Over the phone I was told about a lovely mare, that sounded perfect only trouble was.....she's 32 years old.

I looked at a few others but cannot stop thinking about the 32 year old, she had so much life in her and seemed interested in everything, so really my question is.....Is it totally mad to get her?
Even if she only lives a short time, it means that the last home she had spoiled her rotten and gave her the attetion she deserves. I'm not knocking world horse welfare here they do an amazing job but obviously they can get her as much attention as a 2 horse owner would be able to give her. The lady there was lovely she talked though everything with us and did say we would be the perfect home for her. I really dont know what to do.

She is def 32 she has papers and everything, she also has all her teeth and can still be lightly hacked once a week and do the odd in hand showing class.

If you'd have told me yesterday that I would be considering this today, I'd have told you you were the mad one!

Sorry this post is really just full of ramblings but would appriciate any views

thanks

dwi - she's sound as a pound, loves being ridden, still got a cheeky streak, reckon she was a wicked pony in her day. For vets bills....who knows but obvs at 32 theres only so much you can do.

johnrobert - thats what my mum said too

I have a friend whose old pony lived till over 40

Go get her; sometimes horses 'find' you, not the other way around!

Our old pony was about 37 when he was PTS, so your looking at a few years for sure. Nothing wrong with oldies, they often are full of surprises!
GO GET HER

we'v got a 38yr old whos very fit, costs nothing in vet bills, still has all her teeth & acts as a brilliant nanny to the foals!
go on get her you know you want too! lol!

Go get her! What a lovely time she would have with you!! Being a 2 horse owner and one being 30 id say go for it!! My oldie gives me just as much joy as my ridden cob, they have so much to give!

Agreed! She deserves to be spoiled and happy!! You know it or you would have left it alone by now .....

Naww I love you guys.....just what I wanted to hear, although if you'd have told me to steer clear I would probably have got her anyway.
Now nothings for definate yet but I know theres no one else interested, I've already had the home check and they've met my other horse......will ring them tomorrow so let them know that I'll have her, then hopefully the ball will start rolling

She looks a little like the 12.2 lad who I had pts at 39 (but think he was actually older), he was lightly ridden until he was 36. He was cut late and at one point while he was 37 thought he could have a very good time with my 15.2 mare, couldn't believe the strength he still had when trying to separate them.

I would go for it, we had to be careful with my lad do to lami, he had a couple of really bad spells when he was younger and vet wanted to pts then but we said no, was right choice cause he lived to a right old age and didnt needed vet out for him other then vacs. My only gripe (but not vets fault really) is I had a health check done on my boy in November and he was given the all clear, got teeth checked by dentist (and they were amazed at the condition of his teeth for his age), but early Dec his heart started to fail him and it was kinder to pts. I was devastated as thought he was going to live forever, he was my first pony and taught me loads, boy do I miss him.

Sorry so long but I would defo get another oldie.
