Am I under-rugging?

Well I have just put my horse in a 300grm, had him in 180 all summer, can count on my hand how often it has been mild enough to take a rug off this year.
By the way I keep him in the hills of Scotland, not southern England, he is a TB and very hard to keep weight on if he is not at a comfortable heat. When the time comes he has a bed, but if a cosy rug lets him have an extra month out with his field mates then that is the best option for us both.

If anyone suggests you are being cruel just suggest they check your horse's temp.

I was worried about this too, George is a thoroughbred, ID, shire X and hasn't been clipped yet, he has a universal MT sheet (no filling) at night and that's it. He doesn't seem cold and does adore rolling in the mud - why spoil his fun!!

I've got an IDxTB with no rug on at the mo, she's fluffy and toasty warm with no rug (and i'll keep her with no rug as long as she stays warm). Also got a WB and he has a LW (40g) rug with neck cover (will prob increase to 150g if needed if it gets colder). They are both out at night. Sounds like yours should be fine, i wouldn't use anything heavier yet. xxx

Grr ppl like this annoy the hell out of me!!

My horse is a full Tb and is fully clipped out, he is in a 180gm during the day and 250gm at night with a lightweight hood to keep his neck warm.

I very much believe a hot horse is worse than a cold one, and have to say my horse is just right when he comes in from the field at night and each morning. i have 2 more stages to get through before i reach the most weight i have to put on him IF i need to use them at all, it all depends on the weather not the time of year!!

Now a livery on my yard.......well dont even get me started!

SO in answer to your question,. no, i think your doing fine!

Now I feel guilty rugging, well not really.

I think all horses are different, my daughters pony a 12hh new forest has a full clip and is rugged in a lightweight during the day and a medium weight over night when she comes in.

She has to have a full clip because her coat is so thick she was getting really sweaty when ridden, but she's a complete wimp and will shiver if she gets slighty wet or cold.

My horse on the other hand coouldn't give a dam about how cold it is as long as he's got food he's happy.
