Hello! I'm new here, but have been lurking for ages, so have finally taken the plunge to join. Sorry my first post is a bit of a whinge.
My horse is on 5 day livery, and I've no problems with the care etc.
However at Christmas, YM said she would not do Christmas day, Boxing day or New years day, and we would have to do our own horses, now I accept that people want time off at Christmas, but when I asked if we would get discount, or would she muck out at a weekend to make up ,she got really funny. Also, every yard I've been on, I've helped bring in ,t/o etc, I don't mind, but I would have thought they would have allowed for this when billing for extras. Am I unreasonable ?? Sorry my first post is such a whinge, I'm really nice, honestly !!

My horses are on livery (Part / Full depending on your interpretation), and they get mucked out, fed and watered 365 days a year....that's what I pay for...end of. If YM doesn't want to do it, it is up to him/her to find someone else who will.....or refund you what you've paid for

I dont think you are being unreasonable, i wouldnt want to pay for something that i wasnt getting!
Yes they too do need time off at this time of year but they should make up for that with the bill.

I don't think you're being unreasonable at all. If not a discount, you should certainly get some days/mucking out, etc. to make up for it. Whilst I'm sure it's not something you can insist on, it's a question of goodwill, isn't it? We can all use a bit of that!
Welcome to the forum, by the way

Thank you for replying.Makes me feel better. I've not been at the yard very long , and don't want to fall out with people! All the other liveries except my friend have been there for ages.

At every yard I've been in, they do the horses every day, 365 days a year, and if they want a break, then they have to organise someone else to fill in for them, not the customers.

They are running a business, like every other business, but so many YOs don't seem to register this!

I don't think you are being unreasonable but I'm not surprised by your YO either. When i had my horse on five-day part livery the service did not include care on any bank holidays therefore it didn't include care on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Years Day. This was made clear to me when I moved my horse to the yard in question and i was fine with that as i wasn't working those days and was happy to do them myself on any day i wasn't working. I didn't pay less during December because of this - in fact the idea of asking for a refund never entered my head - perhaps i should have! I now have two horses and am on DIY to keep the costs down so do them every day as a matter of course.

I wouldn't have minded if this had been pointed out when I went there, but I was only told about it the week before (by one of the other liveries, I might add) It just seems a bit of a cheek to expect people to pay for something they're not getting.Livery yards seem to be a law unto themselves.

Hi,
I don't think you are being unreasonable. Infact, at Christmas we offered a service as usual to all our liveries, and didn't charge any extra for the additional services offered to our DIY'ers. In return, they kept the girls in biscuits/port etc.
With regards to your second point, I don't think that you should expect money off any extras if you have helped turn out/bring in of your own accord. However, if the YO had specifically asked for your help to get them out of a tight spot, then maybe you should have brought up the idea of them returning the favour?

I have my horse on the same terms but luckily did not experience the same problem - I did however muck out Christmas Day/Boxing Day/New Years Day apart from anything else it was nice to be able to hang around in grubby jods and be with the horses instead of dressed up and working!!

I sound like a right money grabber! I'm not, honestly. I don't expect money off in return for favours, I was trying to say , there seems to be no goodwill factor, and the yards I've been at (no I don't keep changing yards) seem to be just after your money !

I'm sure you're not a money grabber!!
It seems a shame you have been on yards like this. I try and operate a give and take poilicy at my yard. However, at the end of the day, the yard is still a business, and the margins are so small that tasks that take time do need to be charged for.
I don't know what your circumstances are like, but I try and encourage an open policy to encourage my clients to talk to me if they have any grievances - this stops things building up and negates any atmosphere. Could you not mention something to your YO?

I will do.I like to be open, and I appreciate that running a yard is a lot of work for very little money. As I said, I've only been there a few weeks, and don't want to get a reputation as a trouble maker.

This was standard on my part (weekday) livery too I'm afraid. All weekends and Bank Holidays, the horse was the owners responsibility.

As for payment, this was taken on a monthly basis based on the whole year so there was in fact discounts taken for the fact that some months there were less days being done.

I dont think you were unreasonable, although i found out this christmas that i had to pay an extra £15 for xmas day livery and i wasnt to impressed, but seeing as i was with family for xmas there wasnt much i could do.

I have got an agreement, but it doesn't say anything about having to do horses at holiday times. As I said, I found out from one of the other liveries. Ym is quite young, and I don't think she communicates very well.
