This is prompted by the thread about the elderly man feeding someone's horse. We have a patio at the back of the house that sits out over the horses' field. The horses hang about there sometimes and every now and again I take them out a little treat. They line up like a row of ducks. It could be stale bread, a biscuit each or an apple. This morning I fed them a few cold grapes from the fridge. They have developed quite sophisticated tastes! Am I bad?

I want to say no, but the truth is, I'd be pretty miffed if they were mine, only because It hadn't been checked with me first. There's no way of knowing of any dietary issues or even, if one of them colicked the night before.

It sounds like you're only giving little bits, but the truth is, they are not your horses and you haven't checked with the owner...unless you have and just omitted that from your post.

I never do it, if nothing else, because for all I know, a pony or horse I give a treat to might have been a biter or nipper that the owner is spending loads of time trying to get out of it, only for it to be undone by me wanting to treat them...so I just don't do it.

I know I wouldn't be happy if those were my horses you were feeding. Maybe ask the owners if it's ok. For me it would be a no, don't feed them crap. :)

Before I got a pony who was lami-prone I would have never considered being annoyed with someone feeding my horses tid-bits. Now it annoys me as I don't go to their houses and feed their dogs chocolate over the fence

This, my boy has the constitution of an ox, but my daughter's pony has EMS so yes, it would bother me.

I read this assuming they were the OP's horses. If that's not the case, yes I'd be rather peeved if you were feeding my horse treats of any kind without asking me first.

Oops - I've been out and just got back so just seen the replies. I should have made clear they are our horses! Apologies. I don't ever feed anyone else's horses without permission.

I don't feed them crap - it's good wheaten bread and lovely black grapes etc lol

I keep finding corona bottles in my colts field, maybe someone is getting my horse drunk.. Either that or he's drinking underage!!

Many years ago I lost a lovely 5 year old that I'd had since he was a yearling - broke him in myself and was starting to compete him successfully locally. An old man who lived near the field kept on bringing his grandchildren to feed the horses stale bread etc - when asked not to his answer was that the children enjoyed it. He seemed unconcerned that the horses were getting jealous of each other and fighting. My youngster received a kick one day and I found him a little while later with his knee smashed. Apparently the old man asked somebody later if the horse with the hurt leg was ok - obviously it had happened when he was feeding them. I think finding my horse like that was the worst moment of my life - I felt so helpless, and guilty too as I'd failed to prevent the situation. Perhaps if "horse-feeders" knew about this it would have some effect?
If you're ever thinking "Will I go and see the horses now or leave it till later" - go now! On that occasion I'd been passing the field on my way home from work and I did just nip in to see them, and he was ok then. I came back an hour or so later, after tea, so at least I knew he couldn't have been suffering for more than about an hour, rather than all day.
