Hi everyone, I would like some views on whether Im wasting my horse or not. He is a very talented dressage horse. I've taken him out unaff never out off top two in novice. Hes working very well at elementary at home and according to instructor will go a long way. He only seven. Im finding it really difficult in terms of time and money to afford the training and entering comps. My main dilemma is I work saturdays, most of dressage in my area is on that day. So asIm self employed have to work saturdays to keep horse in first let alone loose saturday money and pay entry fees etc.... I look at him and feel I'm really letting him down. I love the horse he's great but would not want to waste him. Or is this just winter blues and should just do what I can and see what the spring brings.

The main question is 'do you you enjoy what you are managing to acheive with this horse, given the time you have available?'
If the answer is yes, then don't worry about wasting the horse, the horse doesn't care. Nobody ever said they HAVE to fulfill their potential.

Horses do not know if they have talent all they know is if they are fed and looked after.
A horse would rather be happy within its comfort level than an international star who is constantly pushed.
If you like your horse and its happy with you then who cares. I am sure if somebody decent rode my horse he could go a lot further much quicker but as his favourite thing in the world is eating it does not matter who provides that for him!

Thank you for your comments.
I love him to bits. I enjoy just riding him and trying to do new things with him. But I realised his potential the other day when my instructor had small amounts of piaffe out of him. I just thought OMG im just not good enough for him.

ahh lec thats amazing. Just read it. Its made me cry!!!! I have said to my trainer I'm not good enough for him and he just tells me off. I think that i need to believe that we can!!!

If you gave him a choice im sure he would choose out in the field eating grass! i shouldnt worry, he sounds perfect, why would you want a lesser horse!

I totally agree with watcher, if you are enjoying the horse to the full then that's what counts. If you aren't enjoying it then thats another matter.

i think it's the fact you've watched someone else ride him. I watch my trainer ride mine and think right I've got to try bloody harder because he can do it! It inspires me to be honest. Maybe the depressing winter and the 'freezing' riding doesn't inspire us much. I'd rather have a talented horse I can learn and improve on to be fair, it will raise your game in the long run.
