Am I wrong to be annoyed?

I would have gone mental and taught instructor a lesson on manners!! Unfortunately i have found there are far too many out there these days quick to judge and thinking they are Superior, or maybe i just notice it more now as an adult?

No you are not wrong to be annoyed, I would be livid. Personally I would take the childs mother to one side and insist she doesnt use this teacher again. She is obviously incompetent and if she is employed by a riding school perhaps a word with her employer on her behaviour is needed. After all she is representing the said riding school even if the lesson is private. As for hitting the pony round the face, who does she think she is. Get rid of her and make sure she doesnt touch your pony again.

Agreed. I would also point out to the mother (who might well take this more strongly to heart) what an appalling example this adult is setting her son. The instructor has hit the pony, ridiculed it and felt it was normal to be rude in front of the owner.
