Rant alert and saga coming up
In the spring we took on an elderly ex polo pony (23), he turned out to have mil arthritis in his neck and really needed a light hacking home rather than the mad gallopy one my son was offering. we could have retired him but he was fit as a fiddle and the sort of old horse that likes work and fuss
So I put an advert on for him for £200, to see if we could find him a nice home (yes could have loaned but always find that tricky, who is responsible for vets bills etc)
was only prepared to move him on IF the right person wanted him, otherwise he would stay. Had fair amount of nterest and dismssed most out of hand but hd one lovely lady (I thought!) very local, has small stud and wanted light hack when her stallions wre covering mares etc. I delivered him so I could see the yard and specifically said that we were not trying to "get rid" of this pony and that if she didnt get on wih him for whatever reason, would buy him back straight away.
Week or so later she phoned to say she had a 16yr old that she had rescued in the spring as she felt sorry for him and he might suit my son. I tried him and liked him so bought him, as I trusted her didnt even chc passport/teeth etc. Turned out to be in his twenties, passport doesnt match him etc etc
All through the saga of finding this out I have been so reasonable, trusting that she was genuine, that she had been duped originally. She did offer to buy him back and pay me back in installements but I felt bad for her, knew she had our elderly pony to ride/care for so in the end said I would keep new pony and just bear the financial loss, she could use the money for the next rescue.
How fecking stupid am I, have just seen our old pony advertised on horsemart. "fit and ready to go, ideal teenager, jumping etc"
fair enough only £450 but still more than twice what she paid, no mention of light hacking only
Have emailed asking if I can buy him back for what I paid. The thought of paying her more money sticks in my gullet but if she says no, will give a friend the £450 to buy him on my behalf secretely :(
am so angry.
I have been around horses all my life and know all the dodgy dealer tricks or so I thought but this takes the biscuit
By the way if anyone slams me for selling him I repeat it was to try and give him security, with the proviso that I would buy him back at any point, I was NOT trying to get rid of him, he was only going to the rght person.

Erm, has she stated how old the horse is??? Who's going to pay £450 for a 23yo? it's a tricky one, you sold him so, in reality you have no say in what happens to him now. if you'd loaned him you would have had some control. I guess all you can do is speak to this woman and offer to have him back but I wouldn't pay more than you sold him for.

I don't see how you can judge what a person is like in the amount of time it takes them to view your horse .

On the face of it, many people are nice. Then, a few months down the line you realise that actually they aren't that pleasant after all.

Hope she agrees to sell him back to you and your sorry tale is precisely why any horse I have had will die with me.

Not the same - but makes me so angry!! I bought my first horse in June a 22 polo x sold as a novice ride who loved hacking. Brought her home but wasnt riding well so got the vet in who sald she had back problems so needed physio, two months of rest and three intensive sessions later still not really rideable. Started genly walikng around the field and advised by physio to start hacking tried it, at which she spooked, cantered back to the field. After trying again a couple of days later she threw me off! I would love to ride but now have the perfect mare on the ground who really hates to be ridden!! Makes me so cross that people can take advantage and lie in their adverts now I have the perfect companian!! The chances of rehoming her are so small and shes so lovely but I would really love to ride!!

And that is why what horses I buy stay with me until their time, my friends joke about it, as I've just bought a foal, and a friend said At your age to sell on?:) and I said think on:):)

Its shameful isn't it that someone would even contemplate trying to make a quick buck out of an old horse......it sounds as though you may have been too trusting which is not a bad thing to be at all...its just a shame that there are people around who take advantage. Hope you manage to get him back somehow and if it were me I would be giving her a good piece of my mind....good luck

Will phone her tomorrow
Completely agree with all of you who say home for life etc, still have elderly outgrown ponies and retired arab died last year after ten years of retirement. It was only that we had only had this pony a few months and he was capable of doing a useful job in a nice home.
You live and learn
Also this lady is literally twenty minutes away, well known locally and I did get a tour of the yard, met her stallions etc, wasn't just one ten minute viewing.
I will get him back

ClOver1234 am sorry to hear your story, have one (possibly two) elderly light hacks if you are anywhere near and want a ride :)
