Got a text today from a friend that keeps her horse a few miles from mine, text read ' I hear a rumour that your village has strangles, hope your boy is ok?' I replied and said I knew nothing about it. I text the lady who keeps her horses next door and asked if she knew owt about it. She said 2 new liveries had come on Saturday and she had come from a yard with confirmed strangles!! Blood tests have shown that the 2 new ones next door also have strangles. I cannot belive a) That someone would move horses in those circumstances and b) the lady next door failed to mention there might be a threat!! I had to find out from a friend a few miles away!! What is the matter with people? I would have let everyone in my area know if my horse had suspected strangles. Not a happy bunny tonight.

Yes but you see we reap what we sow.... if you are honest you get hounded... you are treated like a leaper... your horses are treated worse than rats with the black plague.... you have hysterics in front of you - you are threatened with if this happens to dobin - your life wont be worth living... you will be made to pay for this... etc

So if we were all a bit more pragmatic about it then maybe folk will speak up as currently folk are scared to tell the truth and then it continues to spread.....

This is so true, if people would really just understand that you are treating your horses and doing everything you can then they shouldnt treat you like crap.
But people should not be letting new horses coming onto a yard with strangles!

Yes I can see that side of the story too, but if your horse is suffering strangles, why would you want anyone elses to suffer by not telling the owner? We are going to find out sooner or later because of the symptoms!!

Charlie - half the time the vets do not have a clue if it is stangles or not - the tests are hopeless - and as someone whom has gone through this with first hand i understand both sides too.

But when you end up having ructions because folk wont come and do there horses because they may catch it when they are on the opposite of the yard, and you have done everything you can and more to keep everyone informed and your horses in quaranteen - i fully understand why people wont speak up.

i was lucky my next door neighbour and my yard manager are sensible folk and were wonderful to me and my horses.

As for a good many of the others - well if they were on fire i would get petrol and a set of bellows.

My horse is just the other side of the hedge. If there is a possibility of a vets bill etc horse out of action and all the other down sides then yes I belive I need to know so I can take precautions.

Just tape off about 10 foot from the hedge if you are so worried - get some virkron - wash you hands and boots when you leave the yard. Dont go to any other yard at the moment - becareful in tack shops and feed shops and the local pub and the co-op etc.

Make sure your vets, farrier, back lady, instructor, the farm cat, the birds in the trees, the rats, the mice and the foxes all do the same and you will be fine.

Thanks Crimbowitch, most helpful!!

I am not being sarky - but that is about as much as you can do - and check your horses tempetature daily and if it goes high phone the vets.

I do feel your pain - i really do - but i am honestly worn out with the nastieness i have had - i have had folk walk away from me in the shop - i have been asked to leave the local feed merchants too - so i do feel a bit raw about this.

And face it when i had two on quaranteened box rest i was too bloody worn out to worry about the next door neighbours - and face it my horse caught if from somewhere too.

No one on the yard would have know my horse had stangles as it was so mild - but no stupid me tells the truth - and i regret that to this day !

Sorry Crimbowitch, thought you were being Sarky, and sorry you have been treated badly regarding strangles.

Just want to protect my boy if I can, and not knowing the situation would make that hard.

Yes checking temp everyday and have fenced off along hedge so hopefully we will be ok

Look out for a cough, any sensativity around the head, especially around the jaw and ears, if the lymphnodes start to enlarge get the vet immediatly.

It is worth getting some virkron, so you can wash your boots off - especially if you are going shopping for feed etc.

Good luck - but remember that there are 6 stains of strangles.... some are bad some are not.

A lot of older horses have immunity from it anyway. At least twice to my knowledge mine has been exposed to it, as in fieldmates, stabled near each other etc, both times she tested clear. One of those cases the only other horse to catch it was a very poor youngster, & tbh if nobody had known about the strangles, it would have been assumed as a mild cold. And iirc, another tested positive but never displayed any symptoms.

A RS in our area hid the fact that they had strangles but it did get out eventually. They were still operating as both a RS and a livery yard with no hygiene precautions taken. Yes, there was uproar in the area when people found out. Another yard got it - the YO, whose land straddles a public road, posted notices locally and took as many precautions as she could, every-one appreciated that and it din't spread further. No-one was nasty to the YO or her liveries that I heard of.
So in our area it certainly wasn't as Crimbowitch describes.

Unfortunatly it is always the few that spoil it for the majority - like i say some folk were wonderfully supportive - the ones that were not were horrid
