First post in here, lack of dog means normally its difficult.

but hacking out today we have an long straight private (ish) access road which belongs to the waterboard.

Someone was exercising their dog, not unusual, happens a lot down there.

they were driving their car and allowing their dog to run alongside and in front of it. Getting up to some serious speed (for a dog) typical boy racer type car. I should imagine pretty unlikely they would stop in time if the dog did get in the way and thought it was hardly an intelligent idea to encourage your dog to race cars. Why do people think this might be a good idea

Or is it just some sort of faster carriage dog.

not sure what sort of woofer it was as didn't have my glasses on, it was blomin fast though.

Colleen and I saw a bloke doing this with a whippet on the beach on Thursday, so funny you should post this!
I have to say, the whippet had lightning-fast reactions but I wouldn't do it with one of mine.

I know friends of ours used to do it with a GSD bitch that they said they found impossible to tire out any other way, and another woman, who we bought one of our old girls off, used to ring-train her dogs by driving round and round her yard and her husband would hang out the window holding the lead

someone near here does this too, but at least they're smart enough to get ahead of the dog. i suppose it's the laziest possible way to give your dog a run.

i let my dogs go up the field with me when i'm on my atv, and have had a running dog stop to have a poo right in front of me while doing about 15mph (quick yell/swerve saved the day, just) so i never trust to them having an iota of intelligence... no squishes yet though...

I've actually ran my jtr over when I used to drive a gator up the old yard, luckily it has huge fat wheels and did her no harm, my heart stopped when it happened though

There is a bloke back home who does it with his dog up the lane where I keep my horse. Dog just happens to be known as very aggressive and apparently has killed a dog previously, so how intelligent of him to allow said dog to run off the lead whilst he is in the car and unable to grab dog quickly

Lots of people walk their dogs up that lane, including the very busy boarding kennels where I used to work!

The sheep collies used to do it, which was the main reason they stayed in the cab until we reached the sheep. too many close calls.

It always amazes me to see sheepdogs loose in the back of pick ups as they are being driven on the roads around here. I suggested to my OH that it must take a lot of training but he suggested that they must get through a lot of dogs before they find one that will stay in
