Another member of the forum posted a link to a video of a man on horse back tortureing a bull and risking a horse getting injured or killed for entertainment.. sorry for being so fluffy and mealy mouthed about it ....
 
Calling another member a "daft fecker" hasn't got anything to do with the content of the video or what you think of the rider. As for hoping that anyone ends up in a wheelchair, that's just nasty.

Sorry I didnt understand the beauty and skill in the video and my lack of understanding caused me to call the poster daft, and
yes about the wheelchair comment I hope he is able to continue to practice his art for many more years, hopefully he will be able to pass his skills on, as its truely wonderfull to see these dangerous and nasty bulls fought and despached otherwise the whole world would be over run by these violent and dangerous animals .. I suppose its a little like George and the dragon only better ...
 
I wouldn't wish death or serious injury on someone who was only doing - very skilfully, it has to be said - what his culture encouraged him to do. What I would like, however, is for people who do unpleasant things to animals or put them at risk for public entertainment is for them to experience - somehow - what it is actually like for the animals involved, so they would be under no illusion.

Really, this ought to be the equivalent of Godwin's Law for Horse & Hound threads! Massive can of worms...

FWIW, I am utterly against bull-fighting but only mildly against hunting (accepting that it may be the least cruel option to deal with rogue foxes in some places where they are a genuine problem, but otherwise remaining unconvinced of a real need for killing foxes).

I was against fox hunting mainly because I think shooting is a more humane and effective way to control them if needed. Besides, I do think drag hunting provides a much better day for riders than sitting around waiting for a scent and being unable to follow hounds into deep cover.
I don't like the killing, maiming or distressing of any animal in the name of sport but there are degrees and bull fighting is to me at my worst extreme of accepted cruelty and glorification of maiming and murder in the name of human pride and accomplishment.

Modified to add. jesstickle, that's one way to liven up a thread and change the focus of discussion. lol

I'm not trying to be contentious. I am genuinely interested in how people feel about both. I promise.

I am anti bull fighting but was pro hunting but even I can see that that isn't terribly logical. It's just that I was brought up with hunting I expect. I find it interesting that even though I know it's irrational I still can't be ok with bull fighting but would like to see fox hunting brought back.

At least I'm not alone though it would seem :)

It's not irrational at all! There is NO comparison between bullfighting and foxhunting.

Bullfighting is a 'baiting' activity - like dog fighting, badger baiting, cock fighting etc. The animals concerned are captive, cannot escape, and are tormented for the 'entertainment' of spectators. They're killed at the end of the torment (and one suspects they don't make great eating due to the prolonged stress they have suffered.)

By comparison, in foxhunting the fox is free and can escape (and often does.) There is no 'torment' - the fox escapes or is killed cleanly. The existence of foxhunting was always a positive influence on the life of foxes in the couyntryside - the old and infirm were caught and despatched quickly. Hunts contributed to conservation of suitable habitat and served as 'discouragement' for unnecessary and excessive fox 'control'!

You can enjoy a day's foxhunting without SEEING a fox - let alone seeing one killed. You can't 'enjoy' a bullfight without seeing an animal tormented and goaded!
 
Thank you JG you have made me feel much better. I have always thought (and will do again in a few weeks) that I am ok with fox hunting because it is 'ours' and not ok with bull fighting because I haven't been brought up with it in my culture. At least I can feel a bit better for a while before I go back to wondering whether if it's wrong to bull fight I should stop hunting, shooting and fishing.

Well, I don't actually fish but it's in the same group of sport.

That is just amazing. I couldn't watch earlier as was at work.

Next time anyone asks me what the hell dressage is and why a horse would ever need to do those things I'm going to show them this.

I fully agree with this, hate anything like that. Horses do and in the past have done so much for humans. Why oh why do some people still treat them like c***
 
Well Spain has voted to ban the bullfight.

If anyone watched the documentary series Horse People they will have seen some wonderful horsemanship, including training without cruelty in preparation for the bull ring.
 
Fantastic piece of riding and skill - amazing horse, I have a Lusitano X and I think he would have a heart attack if I even suggested he do a fraction of those moves!! It does give me some hope that his breed is so nimble that the gene might be in there somewhere - keep on dreaming!! :confused:
 
For everyone who schools their horses or practices dressage all the movements that they are using are based in the cavalry and some of the High School movements or Airs above the Ground such as the 'capriolle' and 'ballotade' have been used to kill soldiers. People have been killed (accidently) even in modern times practicing these movements.
 
my 5yr old andalusian does this .. lol ... seriously though, look at the background of breed. always used for herding black bulls in the rocky mountains and hills of spain. truly an allrounder breed. dressage, eventing, jumping and hacking. its in the blood to swerve and dive and every PRE ive ever ridden was sharp as a knife and could spin and turn like a circus horse yet be super elegant and responsive.
