Even though your lorry is old I would go for it yourself. If you talk to any of the big transporters they will (for a small fee) ensure your paper work is done and even better will sort you the route and places to stay overnight.
This means that your horses will be in a familiar lorry, not travelling with others (and therefore likely to pick up virus etc) and going the most direct route - you will find that with a transporter they are on the lorry for longer than they need to be because of picking up and dropping off other horses en route, and best of all you will be with them. You will also be able to take a lot more of your stuff with you - transporters will often only transport the horse so check this... esp if you want to send some personal belongings rather than horse belongings.
