Well after waiting what seemed like a very long time today we had our saddle fit...............

I can honestly say it was a life changing event.

My mare has had a rough start, we have scaring from previously broken ribs, touch and contact issues and therefore she is very hollow and tense to ride we manage but it has taken a long time to get to just hacking .

Today we tried her in a Semi Flex for the first time and she was a different horse. The saddle fitter Graham spent a long time assessing her conformation, her movement then adjusted the saddle to fit her firstly. Then watching me ride and how the saddle fitted me then adjusted it accordingly so the end result was a saddle that fitted us both and put me in the correct position.

WOW WOW WOW was my first response. She relaxed immediately I got in the saddle, her back felt soft, my position was naturally correct and she even gave a contact and dropped her head immediately into a much better position whilst her legs tracked up beautifully even on her dodgy trot diagonal there was a huge improvement. I could feel so much more of her movement it was like sitting on a different ( much nicer ) horse.

The Semi Flex as the name suggests has a flexible tree that allows far more movement than a conventional spring tree. Mine has serge half panels again to allow more movement and better contact and feel from the leg. The seat is deep and very comfortable and the head is cut back to allow for her high wither. The saddle is exceptionally well balance to the point that as my mare blows out horrendously when girthed and whilst riding her round I didn't check my girth in my excitement at the new horse I was now riding, when I did check it you could have driven a bus through there. The saddle hadn't budged or felt unsteady and we had been trotting circles, leg yeilding ( which she doesn't normally do due to stiffness) and changing the rein another OMG moment . Also after my riding in field incident the other week where she threatened to deck me I was a little apprehensive...... I needn't have worried she seemed very happy in her new saddle and no cow bag moments to report ;)

These amazing guys traveled all the way from Walsall to see my horses and were so considerate and careful in how they handled my ultra sensitive mare, cheeky pony and unbacked 3 yr old. The quality of workmanship is like no other and I would urge other riders who truly care about their horses to spend the time and money getting the right saddle for their horse. From my experience today I would not let anyone else attend to my horses saddlery needs.

If you want more info please feel free to PM me . I am not connect with these guys in anyway ( today was the first time I have met them )and after reading much about them I wanted the best for my dear little mare but I am keen to make others aware of what an amazing job they do as if we don't support truly talented people like these we will loose them. Barrie Swaine and his saddlery team can be contacted on 01922 646468

Hi, havent posted before, but just wanted to say I agree with you totally. Ive had a semi flex with serge panels for four years. I had mine made with dressage seat and working hunter flaps it fits my arab gelding like a dream, and his way of going changed dramatically. It freed his shoulder movement
And improved his canter no end. Has also saved me during a couple of hairy moments. Not cheap, but quality of leather and workmanship lovely. I got mine through katie eaton. (Should say hubby got it, pressie for christmas).

Hello BSL welcome to the Horse and Hound forum :D

My mare is Arab x Cob and a rather perculiar shaped creature so I am amazed to find a saddle that fits us both so well.

We went for our first hack in it today and she went really well. I can't wait to have a lesson on Saturday and see what my instructor thinks.

Oh are they good then? I'm going to have some of those to sell for someone secondhand soon, I might have a sneaky test ride myself :D

Thanks for welcome Beatrice5. Hope your lesson goes well. The only mistake I made was to use an elasticated girth, which gave too much movement. Once I changed it the saddle was more secure but boyo was still happy.

If they really are the semi flex , you shouldnt have any problems selling. Very rare second hand.

Totally agree about the semi flex. I had one for a powerful, big moving horse and it made such a difference to the way he moved.
Stupidly, I sold it after the horse was sold.

I don't have a semi flex but I do use Graham he travels to aberdeen every 3 months and he is amazing. Literally can pull a saddle apart and rebuild it in front if you and get it to fit your horse. Only saddler I'd now use. Hoping to get a semi flex dressage saddle soon too.

Dad changed to an APG equine saddle with a Barry Swain semi flex tree years ago when Jerry ended up with a sore back and the difference was amazing. We now have a gp, a jump and a dressage and I'd like one for Beau once he stops growing.
the only thing I don't like is the serge panels because they are a nightmare to clean.

Another semi flex fan. I have had three, through Kay Humphries. Currently in a gp as I needed more security and more forward knee blocks than the working hunter gave but love them for rider and horse.

Well just a quick update to say our lesson was her best ever :D :D

She did some fantastic transitions and we made huge progress. I am so thrilled with how she is going bless her heart. I do think I may be saving up for a GP next though as I think I'd like to try jumping her next year ;D

I'm not sure what one of these saddles is, so if anyone can direct me to some more info that would be great. I need to find out how best to advertise it for the lady to get her a decent price.
The notes on it say its designed by H Moffett and bespoke made by Barry Swaine on a flexi (or semi flex...I've not got the note here with me to check) tree, lovely workmanship, it's got an ugly looking seat with a wide twist, and serge panels. Weighs a tonne!

There is the Barrie Swain SemiFlex holistic saddles web site. That might help? Sorry, still working out how to do links properly. www.semiflex.co.uk.

Thanks, that's the other saddles though, I bookmarked it to look at later. This one saddle is a bit different, I'm not really well up on these semi flex jobbies.

Also just thought, don't know anything about them but there is a web site,
specialistsaddles.co.uk that advertise holistic saddles. Sorry if repeating info you already know.

I wonder if it's either the St Merryn or Harbourne saddles. I've got a St Merryn and it's just as you describe.

Lifted from EE forum:

Ok chronologicaly:

Champion Saddlery here in Devon made my first saddles

Then Ideal made the next lot for a couple of years.

Then I did a Thorowgood synthetic GP Maxam

Then Barrie Swain and the St Merryn saddle

Later a cheaper version with Barrie, the Harbourne

The Easisit part leather, part synthetic with Saddle Co.

The Flexion Supreme part treed saddle with Barrie Swain, but only 22 of these were ever made as Beta test models.

The Flexion SBS with Nurseys, fully treeless.

The Fhoenix as Fiona said, arose out of the ashes of the Flexion ( and to this day, Ansur have never informed me as to what I was alleged to have infringed)

Then the Fhoenix Vogue, and the Fhoenix Standard, both with higher pommel and cantle than the old model Fhoenix.

The Jeffries treed model is in development at the moment.
