After reading about it on horsehero.com I purchased some. Covered my mothers hunter and my horse in it and they are both coming in from clay fields clean. My mother hunted all day yesterday and her horse just looked like he had wet legs while everyone else was filthy.

We previously used 7 day mud away but pig oil is 4.5 litres for £15 so no contest! It should last for a good couple of months. Also supposed to be great for sweet itch, preventing mud fever and hair that has been rubbed. We are now converted.

If you want to make is even more effective for preventing skin problems - chuck in sulphur as well. Works well on itchy manes and docks when rubbed into the roots.

P&S is an old fashioned and very effected remedy - I get through litres of the stuff with my hairies to keep them free of mites and their feather protected from the thick clay we have.

Also great on manes and tails for having mud slip off -though I bag mine.

Put a small drop in warm water for a final rinse after a bath - wonderful shine for showing.

I get an old hand towel, soak it in pig oil, and rub it all over my foals who are turned out. It makes the rain just bead off them, and they absolutly love being rubbed with the towel!

Can someone post a link to the best place to buy this stuff please? And, sorry to be thick, but would it be OK to use on a TB, quite fine and non hairy but really suffering with heavy clay.

I get mine from my local feed store 5 litres at a time.

Yes! Plaster it on your TB. It won't make him greasy or sticky, but it will keep him clean...use it on mane & tail too! You will be surprised. I hardly ever have to scrub mud off anymore.

Is it a "light consistency" like baby oil ? I've tried baby oil on grey legs and white tail, out hunting, but didn't seem to make that much difference. How do you know how much pig oil to apply ?

I get mine from Heavy Horse supplies - I get 25 litres of oil and 10 k of suphur at a time to keep cost down.

For me they are cheaper than me doing a long trip to get the stuff from the nearest supplier.

You should expect to pay about £15 - £17 for 5 litres - and it keeps for ages if sealed.

It is quite like olive oil in consistency. Baby oil also tends to leave residue.

WARNING.........

Don’t want to be a killjoy but my friends warmblood had a bad reaction to Pig Oil and her hair fell out. However don’t panic the same thing happened when she used baby oil.

Try it on a test patch first......(better safe than sorry)

I very, very nearly posted the same thing, but was fairly sure it would be taken the wrong way!

I am glad someone answered the question, as I have just brought some and wondered whether it was made of or for pigs! You aren't the only ones
