Thanks to all of you on this forum who have offered help. An incredible update.

My CB mare came in lame five weeks ago. My farrier who visited the next morning did not think she had laminitis -vets disagreed and treated her for that. After five weeks on box rest she was no better, infact much worse.

A week ago I had the vet out at midnight as I thought she would die and last night again we thought she should be pts. She has had lumps on her neck and shoulders and been very irritable(urticaria?). My vet thought nothing of this but they did not go away so could not have been horse fly bites.

Last night she would not eat and we could not get any BUTE into her. In my first-aid kit I had some anti-inflammatory/anti-histamine prescribed for another horse. I decided as she was going to die anyway to risk it.

I gave her a shot and this morning she is up, eating, lumps have gone, no laboured breathing. She looks to have lost 50kg overnight!! My vet prescribed aspirin for her four weeks ago. We don't know if it is the drugs, something she has eaten or wasp sting.

My husband was stung by wasps this week and in spite of prompt treatment he was covered in urticaria and had terrible muscle pain.

She is still lame but we will see after a couple of days.

Wow, sounds like the poor girl was in really bad shape there Rollin...... so pleased shes looking better thismorning for you.....

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery and the dreaded decision doesnt have to be made at all for her.....

Even more interesting - someone on another forum has told me aspirin (precribed by vet) can cause resp. problems and she has been very breathless. Drugs I gave her last night are for asthma also.

I am an late diagnosed asthmatic and have a big midriff - I had 43% residual volumes by the time I was diagnosed. My girlie is 6 " down on her weight tape today.

Have been wondering how you are getting on. So pleased for you. Allergies are funny things and it sounds as if you may have solved the problem. I really hope so.

Having suffered severe generalized urticaria myself I can empathize with your poor horse, you feel bloomin dreadful a bit like flu.
It took ages to work out I am very allergic to aspirin as well as less so to related drugs and most perfumes, sprays etc. Any allergic reaction causing urticaria has the potential to cause breathing problems if the throat and trachea are swollen as well as the asthma like symptoms which I get too.
Not saying it's the aspirin for your horse but you never know but glad she's on the mend.
