Is it normal for drains to smell a bit when you have them in an internal stables/american barn going down the central corridor?

Or is it just because they aren't cleaned out enough?

Mine are a bit stinky too, I cleaned one out last weekend, but I can't quite bring myself to do the other...they are so old I'm scared I'll damage the pipework. I took the grids off and had a good sweep out and then let them dry out for a few days (horses still living out). Rinsing feed buckets doesn't help, I try to empty mine over a skip of muck.

We don't have drains in our barn and the stables seem to work fine - just soak up any excess liquid with shavings and sweep out (although we do hang water buckets up to try and stop spillages from happening) - and of course the big bonus is no stinky drains
