american pitbull terriers...???

im not mentioning any names, but i know somebody who has 2 american pitbull terriers as guard dogs, both are very agressive and have to be muzzled. are this breed of dog illegal in this country?

please reply asap to this post or PM me about it. Thanks in advance
 
i would of thought that since the act came onto force in 91 i believe, that if people still own pit bulls (pure bred) then they must be illegal.
 
Goes to show that the law is an ass, really. If the breed were legitimised, the desire by all these unsavoury types to own a Pit would decrease.

150 years ago, my dog of choice, the Boston Terrier, was also used for dogfighting. With responsible breeding, they are now one of the best companion dogs out there. The same needs to happen with Pits.
 
No it is not illegal to own one, but it is illegal to breed them. They have to be muzzled at all times whilst out in public and they are all supposed to be licensed.
 
It is illegal to own or breed a Pit Bull -or a Pit Bull cross people try and get around the law by calling them American or Irish Staffys or crossing Pit Bulls with other bull breeds like the Dogue de Bordeaux - but they are still illegal ( and extremely dangerous).

The dog that killed that poor child last week has been DNA tested by the police and discovered to be 80% Pit Bull - the owner is likely to face a prison sentence and so is the breeder.

The person who is using this type of dog as a guard ( can you imagine the damage they would cause if they got out

) is breaking the law and acting very irresponsibly. You should contact the police and inform them of your suspicions.

Unfortunately Staffordshire Bull Terriers also get tarred with the same brush and unless a clear distinction is made between the two breeds - then the SBT could also be banned .

My brother used to have 2 pit bulls as family pets, I used to go and stay with him with my 3 children and the dogs were fantastic around them. He was heart broken when the new law came in and he had the dogs pts.
I really do believe that any large dog ( or animal come to that) has the potential to be dangerous and savage with the wrong breeding or handling.
You may notice that most of the dogs that get bad press are owned by idiotic chavvy types who want to look 'well ard' ( well in my opinion)
 
You are of course right that any dog, regardless of size, can be aggressive. The difference with the PBT is that it has been bred specifically for that purpose and no other. Dogs such as Rottweilers were originally bred to herd cattle (as were Corgis!), and their size and appearance makes them popular as guard dogs. A PBT has generations of genetic input geared to aggressive behaviour, there really is no good reason for anyone to own one let alone as a family pet.
 
The American Pit Bull Terrier is allowed but only under severe restrictions. It must be registered, neutered, tattooed, microchipped and has to carry insurance. It cannot be bred or imported and when in public it must be muzzled, leashed and handled by a person over 16 years of age at all times.

Yes. And most people don't even know what a Pit Bull looks like. (Take the test to really test yourself )

I own a 19lb Boston Terrier. She has been mistaken for a Pit Bull. Seriously.
 
As Jackie36 says, the law which came into force in 1991 made it illegal to breed pit bulls. Therefore surely the only legal pit bulls must be over 15 years old! I do agree tho about all similar breeds, guard breeds etc being tarred with the same brush. I have 3 GSDs , used to breed them and the main reason I stopped was because of the idiots who wanted to buy puppies. I totally trust mine with children but would still never leave them unsupervised with young children. They are still animals after all.
 
The one on that website is not typical, they usually have their ears cropped to make them less vulnerable. Not sure it is entirely accurate either - Old English Bulldogge? Fun though!
 
Woop, got it first time! it is awful what has happened recently, but i would like to point out that Rottweilers are NOT listed on the dangerous dogs act. i have had so many people hurling abuse at me when i walk my dog, saying that i am breaking the law by letting her off the lead, and taking her out without a muzzle. i am not!
my thoughts are with the family of the little girl.
 
According to the news yesterday Pit Bulls and Pit Bull 'types' are illegal along with 3 other breeds. This means they cannot be owned under any circumstances. They say 'types' so that the prats who think they can get away with cross breeding them with Staffies or the like can still be prosecuted and anyone who lets one get any where near a child rightly deserves to be prosecuted. But what a lot of people don't know is, apparantly, that the Dangerous Dogs Act covers ALL dogs from Pomeranians to Wolves!

Actually, you rarely see one with cropped ears where I live. And an "Olde English Bulldogge" is a new "breed" that tries to emulate the old-style bullies, before they became hideously deformed.

I don't profess to be an expert on dogs, but there are 1.5 million of them in New York, and I've met every single breed there is. We meet, on average, twenty or so strange dogs on a one-hour leashed walk, more if we're at the dog park or off-leash in Central Park. Over the years my dog has played with scores of Pits, Cane Corsos, Fila Brasilieros, etc. with no problems whatsoever. The minor scuffles she has had have involved a Fox Terrier, an English Bulldog, another Boston Terrier and a chihuahua mix.

I saw one at the park not so long ago, as a matter of fact. His legs were longer, and while he wasn't exactly zippy, he did very well to keep up with the general flow of dogs running around

Where do we draw the line? Akita's can be used for dog fighting and I know of an agressive one a few years back where I lived before.

I do think PBT should be muzzled in public areas and kept on leads.
 
It would be interesting to know the facts that surround all of the attacks/deaths/maimings. The circumstances e.t.c

I still believe owners are at fault!
 
I think one thing that has to be taken into account with injuries inflicted by different breeds of dogs is that certain breeds have more physical capacity to produce serious injury than others. I have known lots of affectionate and non-agressive Rottweilers, for example, but if one is to turn nasty their powerful jaws can cause much more serious injuries than could be inflicted by a Jack Russell or a Westie.

The problem with these dogs, which I think are 3 of the dogs that are banned in this country along with the Tosa, is that the damage they cause if they do turn is so immense. I have a lurcher with attitude and I wouldn't leave him alone with a child but the difference is although he could deliver a nasty bite he couldn't rip them apart. How can we breed a dog like a Pit Bull for decades for it's strength, fighting ability and tenacious nature and then allow it to be kept as a household pet?

Do you have problems with children being mauled in the US with so many more of these dogs around?
 
You can't really compare the UK with the US. There is such a vast difference in the amount that populate each country.

There are bound to be more dog attacks out there as murders as its so highly populated.

If the dogs are allowed in this country under licences then I think the homes should be vetted properly (no offence to the family of the little girl who died but the uncle didn't look like the nicest of characters!), the dogs should wear muzzles whenever in public and shouldn't be in the same house as children.

It was not so long ago that little 8y.o boy was mauled to death by his fathers 4 pitbulls. The warning signs are there.
