Hey guys

Looking to buy my lad a MW with neck ASAP so I can get him clipped. My current MW is just a standard neck and a bit mini skirt like on him (Derby House MW). My horse is a medium built 17.3hh WB. Need something deep and roomy in the chest. I hate rugs with high neck lines that throttle them when they put their heads down to graze.

2 I like the look of and have found at a decent price are:

Amigo Hero 6 plus
Weatherbeeta Landa Freestyle

Both are 220g combos.

Any experience?

Cheers

You might need to get the next size up if you go for the Amigo.

Can you try on a Horseware rug and a WB rug (borrow from friend/fellow livery) to see what cut fits your horse best?

Amigo but then the xl version, specially for more room in the shoulders! New series from amigo ideal. We have one and very happy with.

I hate Amigos as I have horses with big shoulders and you can't adjust them. I'd choose a Weatherbeeta.

In reality I'd choose a Shires - better than both of them and great value..

Have never liked weatherbeeta, they just seemed badly fittng even years ago but then they were about the only non-wax NZ you could get back then! I bought a Landa one for my pony a few years back as it was cheaper than the Horseware rugs. Wish I'd not bothered as I did not like it at all - the lining just moves back which I found really annoying and it just looked like it couldn't very comfortable at all.
.
This was before the Amigo range came out and now we have a fair few amigos on our horses and they have done really well and all fit well. So, I would definitely favour the Amigos!

Cheers for your replies guys.

Unfortunately none of my chums or the other liveries have horses as big as him so no rugs to try on. That would hv been ideal.

Il hv a look for a WB Taka. I like the look of the Amigo XL but they're extortionate!

This is the one I have (although mine is blue). It is not mini-skirt like. :)

You can by neck covers to match.

ETA. My mare has the fastenings on nearly the smallest fittings, so plenty of room for adjustment if a bigger chested horse was to wear it.

Yes wonderfully. My ISH are both chesty with a leg at each corner types, and they fit great. For eg, I can't put a regular full size breastplate/martingale on my husband's horse, he has to have extra full size, and the Shires fit him wonderfully.

hate amigos, have two of the lightweight rugs which I use just because I have them and they are a total pain- no proper adjustment and i HATE fillet strings, get covered in crap which rubs all over the horses bums and tails, which is really bad for any horses with white on the back end! and just eurghhh when storing etc. Plus the detachable neck is rubbish, mine ripped up within a day.

I like weatherbeeta, but find they are a bit gapey around the front for my fully clipped horses! personally love shires rugs. Of course if you are a fillet string person then you can still remove the leg straps :)

Well I like them both:

Weatherbeetas fit my cobxID mare great, plenty of room at the front and deep so encorporate her broadness/large belly

Amigos great for my 2 yr old wbxtb as hes got no chest, put mare's derby house on him same size and it was down to his knees
Having said that got given a lw no fill amigo mio for my mare and it fits fine, its a 6'6 where as shes usually a 6'3-6'6 so Id definately go for the next size up

Gorgeous horses Honey08! I'm even more confused now as a lot of u love Shires and find them deep, but your lovely chunk of a chestnuts belly is on full show out the bottom of his.

We seem to have quite a collection of amigos and weatherbeetas (:o) and I much prefer the amigos as they actually keep the horse dry! The weatherbeetas get soaked through so quickly, and they're much newer than the amigos are, which seem to go on forever. I do wish the amigos were adjustable at the front, but they do fit my lady well so I tend to go for those. Not much help sorry!

Yes, we bought that one when he was four, and that photo was when he was eight last year - he is now in a size bigger, which covers him better. I do find they shrink a tad each year when washed too.. Their heavyweight rugs are Derby House, and they are a lot deeper, I have to admit. I also have to admit that they are fatties - big bellies to cover up..

Have no personal experience with Amigos so can't really comment on them, but have found Weatherbeeta always a bit snug on the chest.

Far to tight for my cob, they don't fit her at all. And they rub my TBX so have to wear a vest.

I've found the best makes for deep & roomy are Masta, Shires or Premier Equine.
Cob has a 200g Shires combo, had it for 3 years now. Fits her perfectly, still 100% waterproof and was relatively cheap, I think around £60. Best rug I have ever bought :)

I like weatherbeeta's but have found they are better fits on a tb shape. I've a friesian x Id and the weatherbeeta with the attached necks are a terrible fit.

Do not buy a standard Amigo for you 17.3. About 2yrs ago they changed the cut on their larger rugs, so that they now won't fit anything other than a tall TB type in the 7/7'3 sizes.
To give you some idea of the way Amigo rugs have changed the neck on the old 7fts is far larger than on the new 7'3. The belly straps are too short for a really chunky big horse (shirre cross for example) and the fillet strings are tiny. The Amigo XLs are a fabulous fit on larger types though, as are Rambo's. Have used weatherbeetas on cobby types in the past and found them to be quite generously cut.

I go for weatherbeeta. Amigo's won't fit my cobs as they are way too small in the shoulders, I would have to go up 2 sizes! I have several WB's one going into it's 5th winter and still good as new.

I have always used weatherbeeta rugs, I have a very large warmblood with huge shoulders and find the fit to be great, i have always used the freestyle rugs though, which ones have you tried?
