Amy lurcher has vestibular syndrome ?

Awwww bless her, she will be fine. Rufus is almost back to normal now, just a bit wobbly now and then and his 'event' lasted three full days bless him.

I did ask my vet if it was something I was doing to my dogs because almost all of them have finished up with vestibular syndrome and after much initial hilarity, he did say it's very common in spaniels, which did make me feel slightly better :)
 
What do you do with them after an episode Deb? I didn’t take her for a walk yesterday because I thought she should be quiet and warm, she was furious ? She is eating normally, walking around normally, jumping on and off the sofa etc - I’ve taken today off work to be with her, but I’m not sure how long to wrap her in cotton wool, and how long before I say ‘ok, as you were’ ???

Rufus was ages before he was back to any sense of normality. By ages, I mean he couldn't even chew to eat for three days but the fourth day he managed some scrambled egg, then on the Sunday he bloomin followed me upstairs which caused great panic but he was fine. He slept A LOT for the best part of four days, then suddenly it was like he was reborn :)

I think he got back out for a walk probably a week or or so after but it was literally 5 minutes round the block. Drop him and Button off at home and then back out with Willow for a longer walk. He's back up to speed now and it's been 3 weeks or so since his event. He doesn't seem as inclined to play with Willow for as long but then again she is a rough house little madam, so I don't blame him!

I don't think you can wrap them in cotton wool. Once their eyes have stopped flicking, they're back to normal in their brain I suppose and if they have a wobble they don't panic like we do. They're 4WD at the end of the day and their balance is much better than ours. I would say just crack on as normal but expect her to get tired more easily.
 
Thank you that’s really helpful ? Her eyes had totally stopped flickering by around 8pm on day one, so she was clearly very lucky and it was quite a minor episode - it is foul weather here today so I’ll offer her a short 10 minute walk and see what she wants to do!
 
as deb1222 said, i started walking mine about a week after the event as she was quite wobbly. her eye flickering lasted 2 day so she had a worse attack and therefore it took much longer for full recovery. i did 5 mins for the first day and then increased it each day depending on how long she wanted to be out. i am lucky as i live at the back of the village green so just walked straight out to the grass...i think if amy wants to go out that is a good sign and it sounds as though hers was very mild, you just need to make sure she doesnt get too tired as her brain is telling her she is ok and she may do too much...good luck

No this was definitely vestibular - my little greyhound Flick had a ‘proper’ stroke last April and that was very different to this time.

I’m currently still having the ‘should I even try a little walk debate’.... although I am being rapidly squeaked into submission by the other dogs, so they will HAVE to go ???
 
Poor Amy. It is quite a scary thing to witness. OH's old retired collie had an episode about 15 or so years ago but she also recovered fairly quickly and as far as I remember never suffered from it again. I hope Amy is much better now. If she is wanting to go for a wee walk, I'd be inclined to take her, maybe just not too far for a day or two.
 
We went for a gentle stroll in the woods.... well it was meant to be gentle, I had to keep calling Amy back and telling her to slow down ?

I was going to post a few gratuitous lurcher pics (and some wild daffodils because they are so sweet) but the stupid forum won’t let me ???
 
My dog has just had third episode in 2weeks , this was the worst one so far. Does this mean each episode will be worse ? He is having the Vivitonin twice a day

My old collie had three episodes as an old lady, each was not as bad as the one before. The first attack really floored her, she couldnt walk or eat for days, she was still wonky when she had her second and third which only really set her back for a while. She stayed lobsided until she died a year later and walked like she was drunk. She never had any treatment apart from an anti sickness jab which supposedly has little effect and only for 24 hours.
