Just got to thinking... If a jockey had continued to push on a clearly lame horse, over another jump to the finishing line, what would the jockey club have done?

Surely an immediate suspension followed by ...? My suspicion is the penalty would have been greater than 2 months and £400 fine.

I was thinking when I read the post in LN that jockeys manage to pull their horses up in no time at all when they are lame. Why it should be different or 'more difficult to tel' in eventing I have no idea! I've seen jockeys pull up horses that you couldn't even see as being lame but they can feel it. It's an interesting angle.... :

I truely believe that if you watch the situation again you will see that she was a very long way from the final fence an had ample time to pull the horse up. I have a feeling american lawyers had a hand in getting such a light treatment. Should it have been one of my horses, they would for sure not be in her yard right now or ever again....

accepting that the horse died and that AT was an awful rider at the time - overall - even excluding the bootlickers - the thing I find worst of all is that the FEI concluded that this only became an issue because it was seen by so many people !!

it's as if this sort of thing is 'OK' so long as no-one or not very many members of Joe Public actually see it !!!

(that is sort of one interpretation of the support from the O'Connors and CMP - that 'these things happen all the time and why should AT be blamed')

and the quote above from the HRA was for a minor race perhaps at a minor meeting at a minor course. Wonder what would have happened if a jockey had done this in the GoldCup and carried on in full view of Ch4 pundits jumping a few more fences with a top chaser such as Best Mate limping on 3 legs ? I bet the fine/suspension/etc would have been more and also for certain that the RSPCA would have got involved

The stunning silence of any of the american equivalents of the RSPCA is equally astonishing. Are there no animal welfare organisations or laws equal to our new Animal Welfare Act over there ?

I think you need to bare in mid the relative differences of the sport.
16 days in racing can mean 30 meetings, take a low average of 2 rides per meeting = 60 rides.
£120 per ride = £7200.
Say 5 won with low estimate of £500 jockeys percentage = £2500.
16 days is a long time in racing, and I dont think AT's 2 months even begins to compare.
ETS: A race is a race, and it doesnt matter how bad when horse abuse is invloved. EVERY race is telivised across the world, to suggest the HRA would treat a big meeting/good horse any different is daft.

good point - but Taunton isn't the largest course in the world - but your figures really put in perspective again the 'meat money' pitiful fine of 400 quid that AT got from the FEI

a whip abuse by a SJ rider got a 3000 swiss franc fine from the FEI (so 1200 quid for hitting a horse but only 400 quid for riding it to the vets and then it ultimately being put down)

In this years Grand National one of the placed horses broke down between the elbow and the finish line (not sure how far from the line) and was ridden on. Dunno if there was any investigation into the situation.
