“Le Samurai is resting comfortably at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and has the best care that could be provided anywhere in the world. I wish to express that I am totally devastated about the horse’s injury he sustained yesterday but can not comment pending a review by the FEI. I’d give anything if this had not happened. I love this horse. Le Samurai is very special to me and we share a deep bond that is beyond just competition. Although we will no longer be competing together, he will always be my partner. I thank everyone who has generously assisted with Le Samurai’s care and been so supportive.”

Thought it would be seen more in here. Your thoughts? And having seen the video, just maddening

Just looked at the video and was amazed she didn't feel anything wrong.No competition is worth finishing if it makes your horse suffer .I once jumped in a jump off and as we finished and pulled up I felt something wrong on one stride,I jumped off and checked my horses leg and all seemed ok but led my horse out just in case they eliminated me for not riding out.I would have won but the horses welfare is more important.There was nothing wrong with him ,thank god, but I could have done more damage and I wouldn't risk it
What do you think should happen to her?
 
I thought the horse looked really tired before it happened. I am disgusted that she didn't pull up. Was the horse fit enough?.

I am going to be really contentious here and make everybody hate me.... Surely as a top class athelete the lady should seriously consider the weight she is carrying. Does she not owe to the horse if not herself.

Now I understand and sympathise with people who struggle with their weight, I am not in any way having a pop at them or including them in my view, I am talking about someone who is at the top of the sport here, not an amateur.

PMSL! Well it can be very difficult to control weight.I am over weight and struggle since having a baby but I know it is more difficult to keep a correct position and balance with extra weight on.
Are you thin and do you diet to keep that way?
 
But Carthorse, you are not representing your country at the Olympics. I too am not an ideal weight but if i was competing at a 1 star, let alone a 4 star I would do everything possible to make sure i was at an optimum weight to make things easy not just for me but also for my horse.
 
I'm sensitive about my weight, but totally agree with what you say. If I was a professional rider, there's NO WAY I'd let my weight get out of control.
I've stopped riding until I get weight off.
 
I honestly dont see how they can possibly be that overweight- if you ride two or 3 horses a day and compete regularly, there's no way you can be *that* unfit and you'd have to seriously eat some cr*p to gain all the calories needed to pile on so many pounds

Or do they not really ride much maybe? I dont know!!
 
I agree on the weight comments - the horses look positively tiny under their riders - like some of the pictures you see when a pony is for sale as outgrown - in lot of sports, personal fitness training (and improvement) is a condition of funding (and selection) for major events. Riders looking out of condition add to people's perception of an activity where the horse does all of the work!
 
If you are eventing at that level and doing all the rushing round that goes with it I don't understand how you can get that overweight. I am not ideal weight either, but I don't compete at 4 star level. Hmmm, maybe they snack on their way round!!

seriously though I am overweight and don't have a problem with overweight people (unless seriously obese) but I do not think that horses should have to carry all that extra flab around a 4* event.
 
Blimey I thought all event riders were skinny cos of all the work they have to put in.

Why on earth did it take her so long to realise the horse was lame? Poor thing... how honest was it to jump that jump when it could barely move.
 
I was told about this this morning, a friend saw it live and there is no way she didn't notice, she looked down when he stumbled. She just wanted to finish, though why I don't no it was hardly going to be right of the sjing after that was it! Does make you wonder what goes through peoples heads, ok so she was in the lead after Dressage but it crippling a horse really worth it.
 
She made a terrible decision. She probably feels horrible.

Without defending her decision at all, I imagine she was full of adrenaline, in a position of a lifetime in the lead at a 4* event and willing the horse to be fine. Perhaps an illustration of the power of denial and adrenaline one fence from home.

Having said that, images like that can ruin the reputation of the entire sport. I'm sure she has lawyers involved, but I hope she admits her mistake and apologises to that poor horse.

Half of me would like to see the FEI make an example of her, but it won't bring that poor horse back. I just hope people learn from that video.
 
It looks to me like she knew exactly what she was doing, she picked the horse up, gathered it together and pushed it on to get it over the last fence.

I can't believe that someone at that level doesn't know what a seriously broken down horse feels like.

A really awful decision on her part, and I bet she does feel terrible now.

And as for her weight, I think it's shocking that someone at that level - an athlete for goodness sake - is so heavy. It's not fair on the horse, and I'd be ashamed to be that fat going round a 4*.

Plus, I don't see how anyone who is 'doing' horses at that level can get overweight. She must be eating a huge amount to be that big with all the calories she must be using up competing.

Or perhaps she just rocks up and gets on, with lots of skinny grooms running around doing all the work for her!

I know, I know, really bitchy, but I have no sympathy, I'm afraid.
