An alternative stable

I am thinking of creating a stable under an old cart shed, sectioned off with old metal field gates raised off the ground. There is an earth floor which can be a bit damp occasionally but not water logged, would I get away with putting rubber matting on an earth floor

You may get away with putting rubber mats on an earth floor but field gates for stable walls is a nasty accident waiting to happen.

Earth floors are fine, they can get a bit wet but are managable if you use shavings or a similar type bedding to soak up the pee. My stalls all have soil floors and have had for 30 years they aren't subterranean yet. If you want to use rubber matting as long as the floor is level I can't see the problem with that.

As for using gates, why not? Just line them with a bit of wood to keep your bedding and horse legs inside, no problem, the tubular gates are best. That also means they are movable, very convenient. If you use the weld mesh gates then you wouldn't need to line them at all.

WE use an old cart shed as a stable it has a dirt floor but it gets very wet and can be difficult to muck out as the straw gets trod in , we are going to get a load of chalk stone and use that as a base once it is tamped down with a machine it should make a good base. i dont think rubber mating on a dirt floor would work. I think you have to be careful with gates raised of the ground incase horse gets his legs caught under the gap when lieing down. hope this helps.

The stables I have just moved to have dirt floors (actually the 'dirt' is more like concrete dirt once you start trying to dig the stuff

), I got a load of old slabs off of freecycle and from people we knew, laid them (was a days work levelling the floor, very hard work, and doing the cement) and we are going to put mats over the top. Hardly cost a bean to do it, just need to buy the mats.

It doesn't matter what stable the horse comes out of, but what horse comes out of the stable, surely?
