An LED whip for us hi viz peeps

But that’s just a toy light sabre? That’s no use as a whip.

I am quite happy to stump up the cost for one, but I am hoping that it is not just a regular schooling whip with electroluminescent wire cable tied on - OH could have done that for me. IMHO it doesn’t seem unduly expensive, but I will report back on that when I receive it :).

ETA I’ve just had a delivery notification - it should be arriving tomorrow.

Ooh, I like it! I've always wondered why there's not many flourescent dressage whips, definitely a gap in the market.

Oof, £35 though... Let me know when they're having a half price sale, I'll stick with the strip of yellow tied to the end of my whip for now.

EL wire is great stuff, but if I remember rightly, it needs more than just a battery to supply electricity. The electricity needs to be AC at a frequency tuned to the length of the EL wire. So often you'll find a specific length (for example 1m, 3m or 5m) with a little battery holder containing a circuit tuned to suit the length of EL wire.

That looks like what I'm seeing on Amazon. 3m seems to be the standard. Oh I'm getting all sorts of ideas now :D

Actually I would love a light up driving whip. That way people might notice when I signal that we're turning right and not try to shoot past us into oncoming traffic...!

*scuttles off to see if anyone does one or if I can make mine light up*

I've got a longer whip I use for road driving, I might see if I can adapt mine. I used to have loads of the wire that KB mentions and it was wrapped all round the bars of the carriage.

I've got some EL wire that I bought a while ago for experimenting... the battery and driver circuit boxes are a bit bulky, though.

I've just been looking at the data sheet for the Supertex HV850 driver chip. It's a surface-mount device (3mm × 5mm × 1mm), so might be a bit difficult to hand-solder in circuit, but I might be able to find a way to do it (or find a similar chip in a socketable package).

Three 1.2V AAA sized rechargeable batteries and the required circuit could easily fit inside the handle part of a crop or of a driving or schooling whip.

I have a really good one that is from Mackey but I can't find it on the Internet to post a pic. I think they're sold in local tack shops.

Look on ebay under cycling stuff and its dirt cheap. I had flashing LED lights with red and white, the flashing rope, circular reflectors that were also lights. We had to go on a fast bendy road with a poor line of sight so we were lit up like christmas trees!
